listened to a lot of your input and I couldn't be happier with my choice. picked up a 272 boss with a 502 mag
I run it on a big lake and this thing was smooth. I was looking at a 232 with a 496 ho and went for size and gave up speed and I couldnt be happier. I had a fast 23 that was 74 mph from wellcraft.
love my baja
thanks for your input

Congratulations! Your better off with the heavier hull in a big lake without a doubt. I had a 21' Wellcraft bowrider with a 350 Mag that went 62. It was a cool boat but not big enough for the lake I boat on. During the weekends it gets really rough with all the boat traffic, and the fact that 80% of the lake shore is bulkheaded doesn't help because the waves bounce back and aren't absorbed. Anything much over planing speed would beat the boat and passengers up bad.
My 25 Outlaw is the opposite..I can run WFO on the roughest days and not feel out of control at all.
Looking forward to some pics of your new ride! I was looking at 27's too when I decided to upgrade. I'd love to have a boat with twin bigblocks but I love the fuel economy and ease of maintenance of a singe engine.

Mark,
Gotta agree with you, First let me say WELCOME and secondly, I prefer the size and weight over the speed. I had a Hammer that ran 70MPH an now I have a measly 25 Outlaw that runs 60MPH and can you guess which one I am happier with? As well as Mrs. TBM. Good luck with the ride!

Speed has always been a big issue with me...until my wife set me straight. I was told the new boat must take the waves much better than the 253 Checkmate we had. My problem was the Checkmate was fairly quick and I refused to go down in speed. Then my wife put it to me like this "I want to go down the lake without spilling my drink." I thought makes sense to me...we test drove a couple of 29 Outlaws and settled on the single engine. Surprisingly we found it rode better than the twins, although I would still like to have twins. Also, as always money plays an issue. Now, that we have the new 29 I find that I don't really miss the speed. I can set it on 40 mph and cruse all day long without getting beat up. The stress level is much better for both of us now and we could not be happier. I think you made a very smart decision. When the need for speed comes along you can always jump on a friends boat and let them air it out. Enjoy the ride!

Congrats Mark,
A 272 is a great boat. I had one for 4 years and loved it. Great ride thru most chop. And as far as sacraficing speed for ride, when it gets rough out on the lake you will still be able to push the throttles up with out taking the beating you would have in the smaller boat. Even though that smaller boat is faster........when it gets rough.....you will walk on by!!!!

I put 480 hours on my '96 272 before trading to a 33. The Lake of the Ozarks has unique chop from 40 different directions making it super rough on the weekends. In '99, I was able to tuck the drive, drop the tabs and boated with my wife who was 8 months pregnant on July 4th weekend. Granted we didn't go much over 25mph, but the 272 allowed us to boat. It was GREAT! My dealer has sold a ton of those things over the years and even though most end up moving up. He says he always hears from his customers how much they miss their 272. Sometimes I miss mine.

I wish I had my 93 272 Shooter back, It would be easier to run to Shooters 21 or Toad Cove and dock than In the Current ride.:lol

I am new to this forum but am only a sea-test away from being the owner of a 1995 272. This will be my first Baja. I posted a new post with some questions, but I just wanted to hear any comments or suggestions on the 272. Mine has 356 hours on it with the 502. It sounds like everyone seems to like this boat.
Thanks,
Chris

I have had my '98 272 (454mag) for 3 years and have had very few problems. I've had it in all water conditions, including 8-10 waves off the Jersey shore, and it never let me down. I'd lve to move up to a 32 - 35 twin, but it creates a lot of issues (trailering, dockage, operating costs) that i so far can't justify.
Good luck with your 272 - I still think its the perfect blend of size and performance!
