For those of you who previously owned a 25 Outlaw, what size boat did you go into next? I am considering a change at the end of this season, and I have my eye on the 30 (whenever it shows up). However, I would consider a used 33. Any hidden pros and cons other than the obvious?

Thanks in advance.

HGJC,

I went from a 25 to a 33 (used). Once you get used to the twins and the extra length, its an unbelievably sweet boat.

IMHO, used is the way to go (provided the boat is completely checked out). Mine was 3 years old, with 120 hours. I paid about 1/2 of what the original owner paid :smokin

Naturally, I would want the biggest boat I could afford, but that may not always be practical. Personally, I have my eye on a 30 when they become readily available. I may even wait until I can find one 1 to 2 years used(previously enjoyed :) ).

The 33 is an awesome boat, but the 30 will boast the newest technological improvements that are being implimented these days. I also think it is a great size overall in terms of performance, comfort, towing and storage...all things to consider. I would tow the 30 comfortably, the 33 is a bit too much for my current truck.

I went from a 24 Outlaw to 342. I would have gone with the 33 BUT it didn't have quite as many creature comforts for the wife... :lol

I have to ask:

What type of water do you boat in?
Do you trailer your boat?

There are a couple things I would have to consider if I were deciding on a 30 vs. a 33.

For me, I can’t really go any bigger. I could move up to a 30 but not a 33. The driveway at my house is just long enough so that I can hook the truck and the boat together and not stick out into the street. That’s really helpful since I go for extended periods with them hooked together (I have a little put-put car that I drive to work). If I had a 33, the truck would stick out in the street if the boat and truck and boat were hooked together. I would end up having to hook and un-hook them constantly. That would be a major pain in the a$$.

Also – right now I have to drive 15 miles to find a gas station with ingress and egress large enough to handle my 29. If I had a 33, I would have to drive even farther to find a suitable gas station - or buy gas on the water at $0.25 per gallon more.

You also have to consider how fast you want to go. A 30 OL with HO’s would be a fine choice and put you into the 80’s. The speed of a 33 OL with HO’s may leave you wanting more. This means an even comparison now becomes a 30 with HO’s or a 33 with HP’s. The latter may be out of your price range.

The one bad thing about the 30 OL is the fact that there aren’t any out there yet and I think it’s safe to say there aren’t going to be any ready for purchase this season. This puts you into next season for a 30 OL and even then, it means you will be buying one of the first ones. Personally, I would not want one of the first 30 OL’s to come off the line. I don’t feel like being Baja’s guinea pig for the 30 OL. Given that, you are now looking at 2005 model year for a 30 OL with the bugs worked out.

Anyway – These are the types of things that I would be thinking about if I were in your position.

That gives me more time to save up $$$$$$$$ !! :D

OUTLAW29 touched on some great points to consider.

Now if we only knew how fast the 30 is going to be with 496 Mag HO's, and better yet 525 EFI's! I'd love to have the economy of the 496 HOs but the beautiful blue 500HP or 525s would make me want to splurge for the extra $$$. If it were only a difference of 3-5 MPH, then I'd go with the cheaper HOs and burn less fuel.
The 33 has been around a long time and all the bugs are pretty much worked out but they run mid 70s at best with the 496 Mag HOs. I've never seen one with the blue Mercury Racing engines in it but I'd guess 80 tops with the HP500EFIs.

I use high and dry at my marina, and I boat out in eastern long island.

The fact that the 30 will not be out for some time, and there will inevitably be some "bugs", makes me look to a 33. Also, the 30 will be premium $$$, while I might be able to swing a decent deal for a used 33.

Top speed is not my greatest concern.

I am not sure why you have not considered the 29 Outlaw. I currently own one and do my boating on Lake of the Ozarks where we receive some vicious water due to the amount of boats and the size of the cruisers. The 29 rides excellent in these waves and as far as power you can get twins or a single, which gives you as a consumer more options. I have no regrets on my purchase and would recommend the 29 to anyone who wants a good ride. I have a single 496 mag, which rides better than twins. The speed is not there like the twins

Don,

Actually, I did consider the 29. The dealer had a left over 2002 significantly discounted when I was shopping. I did not buy it since I was a bit uncomfortable having two engines in my first boat.

Other than that, I loved it.

I think he means, why aren't you considering the 29 now as your next move up or as another option to consider and only looking at the 30 or 33?

I am not considering the 29 since I prefer the straight/angular windscreen lines instead of the more rounded look on the 29.

Makes sense to me. I would be a little cautious of "any" new item the first year or two it comes out on the market. There are always bugs that need to be worked out. Curt "Called in Sick" has a 33 Outlaw that is awesome and a blast to ride in. Good luck hunting!!!

To answer few questions brought up here:

I've driven a '99 33 Outlaw with 500 HP's, and while the speedo was good for about 82 MPH, it was likely a real 77-78.

Blake can confirm this, but I believe the 30 Outlaw prototype that was just in NH had 496 HO's in it, and the rep's claimed it was good for 76 MPH on the speedo that day. :|

The new 30 looks to be a great boat, when it gets ironed out, you just won't get as many amenities as the 302 offers.

From what i understand, The 30 Outlaw was having problems either electrical or fuel deliverly that didnt allow it to rev into the upper RPM's while it was in NH so a top speed run was not available. Im sure Blake will chime in soon with what exactly happend.
