loaded our 272 onto just received eagle trailer yesterday, approx 12" overhangs the bunks at the rear. bow is up against the bow stop. the winch support is as far back as it can go (towards the rear of the trailer). I suspect that the winch support should be adjusted towards the front of the trailer by a minimum of 12". should the rear of the boat be lined up flush against the back of the bunks or should there be some bunk exposed? thanks.

Correct, your trailer is too short and can cause a hook in the hull where it hangs off over time. Adjust it so the entire hull is supported. If there is not enough adjustment to do this then you will need a different trailer.

there is lots of room for forward adjustment. it is an Eagle trailer specifically for a 2001 272. once it stops raining I am going to go outside and move the winch bracket. thanks for the confirmation.

BajaJuanita:
Sounds like you've got the right info. There should not be 12 inches of bunk sticking out! A couple of inches at most if the trailer is a bit oversized. You want as much bunk as possible supporting your boat.
Be sure to check the tongue weight on the trailer with the boat loaded in proper position once you've made your adjustment. Also check the distance between the trailer rear supporting crossmembers and the drive(s) AS IF the drives were in the DOWN position.

On Eagle trailers, on the back of the trailer underneath the bunks, you will see the support Tee that the bunks are lag screwed onto. This Tee should be directly underneath the end of your transom to fully support the weight of the engine(s), you will end up with 3-4 inches of bunk exposed not 12" worth.

I adjusted the winch support forward 14" and after returning from Put-in-Bay this evening got to try it again. unfortunately it was just dark but this time only 3" of the hull overhangs past the bunks but the bow is not up against the bow stop. maybe my third attempt will get it right.

I have a 99 h2x on a eagle trailer and if 2 inches hang off the rear of the bunks i can lift the boat up with 1 finger on the tongue....be careful!
