I put it in the "Baja Regattas / Meetings / Poker Runs" section and have not got any responses.
Is anyone going? Or am I going to be the only boat and be a shoe in for the Baja Mag.?:b

Ok Pit let me brighten your day. Actually, from BTM to Capt. galley is 24 miles. Up and back is 48. Then from BTM to Time out is about 9 miles. Up and back is 18. That's 66 miles total. I don't know what kind of motors you have, but I am assuming the 496's. You should be getting at least 1.25mpg. I had an buddy who had a 420 with triple 454's and he got 3/4mpg. Of course if you run WOT, I see your point. Anyway, at only 1 mpg that is 66 gals. Bob gives you a 25 cent discount on your house account. And don't forget about the Missouri 17 road tax refund. That is $1.58 gal. For 66 gallons that is roughly $105.00 in fuel. See you just need to be more optimistic! Ha ha ha. See there I just saved you $295.00. I will collect my 10 percent commission when I get down on Thursday. ha ha ah.

I do agree about the "rich mans sport" I just had my second child. And out of all my life experiences, I have just figured out one thing. If a company puts "marine" or "baby" on the packaging, the price automatically doubles!

I know, I am just giving you a hard time. In all seriousness, for those of you who have never done one of BTM's poker runs, man they are a lot of fun!!!! I think you will agree when it is over, it is all worth it. It has been about 4 or 5 years since they have done one. They always used to be on Mother's Day weekend. So you guessed it, I always felt like a heel going to the lake on that weekend. But hey, got to set your priorities, right? To quote Bob a couple years back, "If your house payment is more than your boat payment, then you are either not a true boater or your priorities are all f@#$ed up!"

bajacraig
July 21st, 2003, 08:13 PM
OK Curt,
Lets see if you can make me feel as good as PIT.
I'm starting at the 38mm. The way I see it, that's 126 miles for me.:o :eek Now I know that Baja says I should get about 1.5 mpg @ 3000 rpm. I'm thinking we will be @ 4000 for most of the run.
What Bob didn't tell you was the gas bill would also be more than your house payment :eek

ckmansell
July 21st, 2003, 09:16 PM
I wont be at 4000rpm. I will have a 5 week old baby on board w/ the wife and I. Besides, I have learned from previous poker runs. It is kind of nice to be one of the last ones at the stops. That way you are rafted off on the end. Less foot traffic across your boat, and you can leave and head to next stop earlier. It is kind of fun to be on your way to the next stop and be poking along and watch'em all go fly'n by!!Anyway, you could save yourself about 55 miles if you come to BTM in the morning by land. Register, visit w/ all the folks, shoot the bull on the decks etc., then when the run starts, go back to your condo, via land, get your boat and meet us at Capt Galley. You should get there about the same time, no one would ever know and the only thing you would miss is the trip with your family to BTM in the morning and the first leg of the run. After that you will be with us the rest of the day. That way you only have to come down the lake once. Probably save you about 80 bucks in fuel. If you don't want to, I definitely understand. I love to put hours on my boat. Just a thought.

bajacraig
July 21st, 2003, 09:33 PM
I kind of want to see the start.8o I've only seen one or two on TV. We have a sitter and I think the wife is getting into the speed thing.:D I like the idea of being on the outside. We may need to get out fast if grandma freaks out.
I know you had said that 20 boats had RSVP any guess now?

ckmansell
July 21st, 2003, 11:20 PM
I kind of figured that, but thought I would offer up an idea anyway. I got a sitter for our 3 year old, but baby has got to go w/ us. (nursing) I don't have an idea yet how many RSVP's they have yet, but I have to guess at least 50-60. In the past it has been about that many. Some boats will have multiple couples. Each playing their own poker hand. One year we had over 80 hands of poker. At $100.00 a hand that is $8000. Usually they pay out 50% in prize money and donate the other half to Gravois Fire Dist. Now that is a thought, if you win, that will offset those fuel costs!!

July 22nd, 2003, 12:23 AM
The BTM mother's day run used to go all the way to Big Dick's at 48 MM and all the way up the Gravois to Frogs a total of about 110 miles.
I have been on many of these events at LOTO and on the Mississippi. Many time the moderate twins (29's and 33's) don't burn much more fuel than a single like say a 25 with a mag or 502.
Once everybody spreads out the pace slows a little.
And remember this is not a race (yea right).
Also it is on a Friday morning and the water will be calm for LOTO.

You know it just dawned on me after seeing one of my Iowa buddies on here gearing up for the Baja run on Friday. Where are all you St Louis guys!? We have been ranting about the run for a couple weeks now over here on the KC side. Now Iowa has jumped in. But how about you guys on the east side. I know BTM sells as many Baja's to you guys (especially now that "My River Home" is defunct) as he does to KC guys. Are you going or what?

July 22nd, 2003, 05:08 AM
I don't know about anyone else, but I have run the main channel and don't really look forward to it in a 24' boat anymore....too many Cruisers these days....

We had a 60+ footer come down the Niangua branch last Saturday within 20 feet of the no wake buoys...tore up a few hoists and boats...not to mention a couple of 50 footers, about 15 40 footers all headed for the little Niangua...WTF would they want to go to the smallest branch of the lake for?
I'm sure they knew what they were gonna do!

But if I get back in time Friday I would like to get some video when they come down the lake....

BDannecker

Dan,
Doesn't anyone hold these boats accountable for their wake?
Hell, I get bitched at by the bass boaters if I'm within 50 yards of them - on plane!

Bruce..

ckmansell
July 22nd, 2003, 04:41 PM
Dan,
There will be several Baja's smaller than 24 in this run. It is not a race and you can take your time. They usually allow plenty of time at each stop for everyone to make sure they get in. Also, that is the purpose on having it on a Friday. A lot less boat traffic. Hell, I don't look forward to that main channel on a weekend in my 33! Over the 4th of July I never broke 30 mph.

ckmansell
July 22nd, 2003, 04:42 PM
Bruce,
Here is how it works in Missouri. Yes, they can be held accountable, but for their damage only. If you can prove it. But there is soooo much chop out there!! Proving that one wake caused the damage would be difficult. It would be a civil court deal, and you know how hard those are to win. As far as being held accountable for making huge wakes, generally speaking they are ok as long as they are within the law. The law is this. No wake within 50 foot of another vessel. (underway) No wake within 100 foot of fixed object (docks, etc) or an anchored boat. To be considered anchored you must be "made fast" to the bottom. Simply floating won't get it. So in other words, if some bass fishermen are floating out in the middle of the lake fishing, technically I could run by them as close as 50 feet at WOT and not be breaking any laws.(stupid yes, but not illegal) Then we have the old "orange flag" law. You must be at no wake within 150 of a vessel displaying an orange flag. This is the most misunderstood law in the state. The laws requires you put up an orange flag when someone is in the water and the engine is running, PERIOD! However, many people display this while swimming from a boat or forget to take it down after their skier is up and under way. They are now the law violators for inappropriate use of the flag. And yep, you guessed it, a lot of fishermen put one of these up to keep powerboats away. But many have been cited by the Missouri State Water Patrol for inappropriate use. I will also see some runabout coming at me pulling a couple tubers with this flag up. By law I must pass them at least 150 ft. or shut down to an idle. However, they, by law, should have took the flag down once the tubers were underway. If I pass by too close we could both be cited. A lot of this is ignorance to the laws, not necessarily intentional. But then again, I see people swimming from boats w/ this flag up to keep boats further away, because, in my opinion they were too lazy to drop anchor. Intentional or not, if your going to boat, one would think you would take the time to know the laws!!!

BDannecker
July 22nd, 2003, 07:34 PM
Curt,
I had a long discussion with the GW after he took a complaint on me. I typically boat on my local lake which is only 1800 sq acre, so everyone knows every boat. As such, my boat pisses a lot of people off simply because it "doesn't belong on their lake." I am sensitive to this and boat accordingly. I go to enough poker runs to "air it out", that I do run pretty conservatively in Tyler. But there will still be those that just get jealous or whatever. The Game Warden was cool about it and in fact said "they are just looking to get someone in trouble because they don't have a boat like that." Sure glad HE feels that way. I see him every time I'm out so he knows how I drive. :|

What a fantastic day it was Friday at LOTO and Big Thunder Marine Marine for the first annual Baja Magazine Run. We showed up early to get prime dock space only to learn anywhere on the docks was prime space. Registration was quick and easy, we received a 1st Annual shirt and towel, which looked awesome. There was fresh fruit, muffins, juices and a host of other goodies prior to beginning the run. Baja magazine was giving out shirts as well. It was awesome seeing so many Baja's on the water and the boaters were very fun people. We took off from Big Thunder around 11:20 am, talk about a site as 60 Baja's took off the water looked like a washing machine churning full speed. The roar of the boats all taking off at the same time was incredible for a boat junkie such as myself. The weather was perfect...sunny...hot! As we went under the community bridge Ron Layton of Dream Machine Images was taking pictures, which I must say, our pictures turned out excellent. All of the stops were great and the party at Big Thunder after the run was over was equally impressive. I actually caught Bob Morgan the owner of Big Thunder cooking hot dogs and hamburgers on the giant grill and without Sue organizing this event who knows what could have happened. One of the most memorable days of boating I have had. Curt "Called in Sick" took an awesome picture of Baja Craig's fly-by at 70 + MPH. I must say it was a pleasure meeting Dennis "Bottomless Pit" and his wife along with Craig and his wife. What a day of boating, I can't wait for next year's event!!!

Sounds like you all had a great time, not to change the subject but after reading the thread on the drunken boater I went to the water patrol site to look at some of the do's and don'ts...here is the official orange slag rule Curt mentioned in case anyone is interested.....

2. Whenever any person leaves any watercraft, other than a personal watercraft, on the waters of the Mississippi River, the waters of the Missouri River or the lakes of this state and enters the water between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and sunset, the operator of such watercraft shall display on the watercraft a red or orange flag measuring not less than twelve inches by twelve inches. The provisions of this subsection shall not apply to watercraft that is moored or anchored. The flag required by this subsection shall be visible for three hundred sixty degrees around the horizon when displayed and shall be displayed only when an occupant of the watercraft has left the confines of the watercraft and entered the water. The flag required by this subsection shall not be displayed when the watercraft is engaged in towing any person, but shall be displayed when such person has ceased being towed and has reentered the water.

3. No operator shall knowingly operate any watercraft within fifty yards of a flag required by subsection 2 of this section at a speed in excess of a slow-no wake speed.

Curt, I too was very unclear about the orange flag. It seemed odd to me that if the "skier" is in the water (potentially 75' - 100' from the boat ie. length of ski rope) and your engine is not running, you didn't need the flag up, however once started, you did. This is according to the Missouri Handbook that is the free handout you can get at the license bureau. Anyway to keep this short, last year I asked two Water Patrols, one Coast Guard Auxillary instructor, and one game warden. Only the game warden agreed with the Missouri Handbook. The other three stated that according to Missouri Law, the flag is supposed to be up at any time there are people in water regardless if the engine is running or not and that the Missouri Handbook is misleading and out of date. This would mean if you parked at Party Cove and anybody is in the water, you should have the flag up. ??? How many flags do you see. 0] I don't think anyone has been ticketed for that yet. Supposidly one of the word plays states that if a skier is on plane, that object is now a vessel therefore the flag should be lowered yet both Water Patrol guys stated they would not ticket someone for having the flag up while a skier is underway. I did not ask about fisherman using the flag as I don't fish.

Anybody on this site a water patrol or lawyer that can get to the bottom of this flag issue and get hard evidence?

Enquiring minds want to know.

Curt, we were down at LOTO July 17 - 28 and one of the sales people during the week told us that they were doing the event on Friday and when to stop by and check it out. We didn't get our 25 from BTM either. :rolleyes Sure glad we came by, it was nice to see the 40 Outlaws and 500's/575's stuffed in boats.

PIT your boat looks great! We had several Baja owners with us in P Cove and they all noticed it when it came in.

One of our buddies got interview by Baja at Dock Knockers and they took a few pictures. We all had a great time, I guess we didn't blend in as good as we thought we did! 0]

Joe,
Dan posted the law verbatim above. It clearly states that the flag is to be lowered after your person is under tow. And your right, I doubt if you would receive a ticket, which is the officer’s discretion. But in reality, even if they are violating he law by not lowering the flag, you as a boater are required to either slow to idle or move out at least 50 yards. (150 ft., I use feet because everything else in the statutes is feet) And on the LOTO on a weekend, because of other boat traffic, etc, sometimes there is not enough room to move away and be legal, so I must shut down to idle. This pisses me off; I have to interrupt my boating because some idiot doesn't know the rules of the flag! Regards to swimming, I did choose wrong words saying "engine running” what I meant is just "running." In Missouri law unless you are "made fast" to something. Such as anchored or moored, if you are on the water you are considered running. Example, if you're floating on the lake at night with engines shut off enjoying the night air with your significant other, you are considered running. You must have on navigation lights. Throw out an anchor and you do not have to have navigation lights on, just the anchor lights. Seems silly, but that is the law. Now, back to swimming, if anchored or rafted to another boat that is anchored you DO NOT need the flag. Thus, no flags at party cove. However, if you’re boating down the lake and stop to take a quick dip to cool off, unless you drop anchor, you are considered running and must throw up the flag. I do not have a problem here, it is those idiots who do not take it down while towing down the lake, or some family who drops anchor right in the middle of a large cove or arm of the lake to let their kids swim for a couple hours and puts the flag up when not needed. As far as lawyers or experts, I will welcome their opinion, however do not feel I need it, I have been a cop for fifteen years and boating for thirty, the law Dan posted above, to me anyway is crystal clear.

Eddie & 1ASH,
I was just giving you trouble. Didn't mean any harm. It is kind of like a guy showing up to a Chiefs game w/ a Raiders jacket on. As a matter of fact, I was going to look up the driver of the .38 at a later stop and shoot the breeze about his boat since I know of another one like it. However, I never saw the boat again the rest of the day. You must have peeled off somewhere. By the way, I take it from your post, you do not normally boat at LOTO, where do you guys normally boat?

Sorry Curt, I didn't see Dan's post before writing my experience and questions. Sounds pretty cut and dried to me as well.

Boating the Mo River usually gives everyone plenty of space to run. I find myself running WOT often for great lengths hoping to find some waves or wakes. :D

I bet you do! A 25 Outlaw w/ 502, wave and wakes I am sure make it really fun. I take it you are from the St. Louis side. We have friends over on that side. We have always heard there is a lot of good boating and much fun to be had on the Mississippi similar to LOTO. I have always wanted to tow my boat over there and take my friends out. But I don't have much experience with river boating and worry I will find an unexpected sand bar or something. Maybe by making a few new friends on here, I can find me a navigator if I ever decide to tow it over there?

We boat around the Omaha, NE area on the weekends and trailer down to LOTO a few times each year. Try to take a long July trip and hit as many places on the lake while we are there. This year the Shoot Out (http://www.omahariverfront.com/cottonwoodmarina/index.htm) will be held at Cottonwood Marina September 5 - 7. Come on up and check it out, I know we have some people from Kansas coming up again this year. :smokin We boat on the Missouri River most of the time. I live on a small lake next to the airport and the wife and I hang out on that once and a while.

Eddie, I don't think there is one set in stone yet. Since Baja is also involved now, there are a lot more people to coordinate with. It always used to be on Friday on Mother's Day Weekend. I called down to Big Thunder today for ya, they are planning on looking at the 3rd weekend in July, possibly the last weekend. One of the two is a good bet. Hope this helps.

Thanks, ASH & I are looking at July 16 - 25, 2004 for our week long trip. If it falls into that, I think he's going to register the .38 and I'll ride with him.

We got hammered in our 25 and bailed around Shooters, not what the wife calls a fun ride :trampoline !

Eddie,
I was going to ride with Ash also, I guess when you have a monster boat like his he can haul us all around :thatsfunny . That 25 should eat that lake up! Tell the wife to hang on and hit it! Just kidding I know the feeling, that is why we are now currently in a 29.

You quit just a tad too early. The further you go up the better the water. After another five miles or so, you would have had smooth sail'n.:winkgreen

That's easy to say when your roll'n in a 33 or 29.
:headspin
I got in the back of the pack - That was part of my problem.

I also had the 24 Bravo on the boat and one of your BT buddies that has a 25 said it gives the boat too much lift and changed the ride. Not sure if it's true or not, but we were getting hammered.

ASH has plenty of room in the .38 - we will be fine. I hope your wife knows its "thongs" only for the girls on the run.... :bigsmilebounce Oh, and they have to match! :dancinbanana
