I was told that a few years ago, HUGE chunks of ice broke off from back in coves and came down the lake smashing into docks and sinking them. :x
Is this true?
Should I rethink where I keep my boat during the winter?
I would think if my dock gets sunk with my boat in it, the boat would be FUBAR :x

Never heard of that...not that strong of a current...
I have heard of them almost flipping over from getting top heavy when ice and snow accumilates on the roofs....
also heard of them getting stuck in the ice and damaged if the lake drops....heard of small docks breaking loose but never sunk...
A lot of ppl. keep them on lifts...I have heard it's not a good idea, just in case! Those pumps (or whatever they are called) that stir the water up will keep a dock from getting iced in....

Thanks Dan
I was told that it wasn't the current as much as the size of the chunk of ice and it just sheered the encapsulated foam off from under the dock.

Where I'm at...the docks that aren't encapsulated lose a lot of foam from the wake in the summer and don't sink...
I would think it would be nearly impossible to sink your docks ...
It would seem like that might happen on a smaller private dock or that the pressure from a huge ice flow would break it loose in a rare circumstance....
I just talked to my friend at the lake and he's never seen it happen on the Big Niangua main channel....I was worried about my lift because he's selling the place and I wanted to make sure he had those pumps going.

Craig,
I was very busy yesterday and not able to see your post. I would have to say this is BS, since I have been going to the lake most of my life. I guess there could be an isolated incident, but I doubt it. With the winters we have now I don't think the lake even freezes that bad to make huge chunks of ice. I would not worry unless someone else has had this happen to them in the past. I have never heard of it happening though. How’s the boat look?

I was down on Mon. going over it with the guy that Baja is having do the work.
I think it will look good when he's finished.
He told me "it will be done by Thursday".
The bad thing is that BTM's cove is frozen over so I don't know when I'll get her back.
I may just go over and give her a good wash and wax this weekend while she is out of the water.

I think they may pull it out as soon as they get the headliner done. It would be NICE to do it in the shop.... I think I'll give them a call.:biggrin
I still need to go over the boat with them to see what else needs fixed b4 the warranty runs out.

If you find the time feel free to wax ours as well, since it is still there.

I haven't seen your boat. :rolleyes
It must be locked up way in the back behind all the boats that they plan on working on first. :lickthis :samurai
When are you going down next?

Probably witin the next few weeks. Barb has some painting she wants to get done before we bring down all of our stuff for the summer. Don't that sound like fun. Actually, it will be nice just knowing boating season is just around the corner.

Thanks, we appreciate it. If nothing else maybe we can meet for dinner and an adult beverage. Is your area of the lake covered with ice?

The coves on both sides are and it goes out past my docks.
I could get my boat out but I don't know if it would brake a lot of that off and cause problems for people and myself.
It didn't look like any boats have been out for a long time.

I was at BTM last week to see were they where at on my boat. It was in the nice warm shop and 2 other boats where also in there. What color are your boats? I took pictures of my boat and I noticed the other boats in the back ground.

All kidding aside, I havnt heard of any docks being sunk or damaged by errant ice flows...the coves do freze up some in the coldest part of the winter...like NOW.. but they do melt off and send small chunks into the main channel but not of any significant size as to sink a dock...as long as you have an "ice eater" going around your dock and we dont get 18-22" of snow like we did in '95 I would say your Baja is safe.....

Two years ago we had a friend's neighbors dock get damaged by a big chunk of ice at the 1 mm on the big niangua. The dock always has a big cruiser and a ciggarette parked there but htey hardly ever seem to take them out. The owner has a car dealership in jefferson city. This is the only time I have heard of ice flow damaging docks. Some people have had twisting damage from ice forming around their docks though
