Hello all...need some travel advice. Driving from Orange County CA to Fort Dodge, Iowa. No issues until I get to Utah..then there are two ( or three ) options. MSN Maps said the quickest way is to take 15 to Salt Lake City...around Salt Lake to 80 then 80 to Wyoming...across Wyoming on 80, through Nebraska and finally into Iowa.
Another option I have ( possibly the safest for winter weather ) is 15 into Utah to 70 East through Utah to Colorado where I could continue on 70 Through Kansas all the way to Kansas City Mo, then North To iowa...or...
15 into Utah to 70 East through Utah to Colorado...then 70 to Denver Colorado....then hit 76 which travels NE where it meets back up with 80 in Nebraska.
Looking for opinions...hopefully one of you have taken these routes...please consider the seasons, road conditions, frigging snow...etc. Thanks for your help! Photos of the grand trip will be posted!

I-70 across Kansas can be very nasty if there is any snow or ice in the forecast. It seems like they shut down the interstate several times each winter due to snow conditions. It is a very flat state out west and the snow blows like crazy drifting over the highway. If the weather forecast does not call for bad weather then you can make some good time and the highway is in good shape with no road construction. We drove this route from Kansas City to Keystone, Colorado over the holidays for a ski trip and we had no problems. Good luck.

Used to live out there. Keep in mind that I-70 will take you over the rockies through rabbit ears pass and all the ski resorts and then through Eisenhower tunnel. That stretch can be very nasty. If you go that rout, take your time, and be very careful as the highway can be very twisty. If you decide on I-80 after you pass Cheyenne it is not that bad at all and in my opinion is better in the winter with less traffic than I-70. Either way you can run into trouble but personally I think I-80 is the lesser of two evils.

when are you leaving? There is snow and ice coming tonight in Iowa and then strong winds on Saturday. What brings you to Fort Dodge Ia, if I may ask?

Take the I-70 route it's alot better than I-80, you will not go over Rabbit ears you will go over Vail pass and Eisenhower tunnel which are alot better than I-80 this time of year with the wind and ice. If you come through Denver e-mail me and we can hook up for lunch/dinner. mikehyziak@earthlink.net
