Do you like the boat or not ???

January 3rd, 2005, 01:30 PM
Ricky, I personally like the boat very well. I would have probably ordered one, but Ali really wanted a windshield so I decided to compromise and get the 245 which is very similar. Are you starting to second guess yourself? Remember, it does not matter what we like, but what YOU like. You are the one paying for it, and it has to fit your wants and needs. From all the info you gave us about yourself and the area you boat in, I would say it's a great choice for you.
Ricky

No I'm not second guessing myself, I love the boat just wanted to get another opinion. Thank you.

thanx, it's not in the bag till monday, you know the whole numbers game. actually I have been browsing all day for some pricing on them to have some ammo against the salesman on final numbers. Any suggestions or does anyone know about what they are going for across the country. The options are; 496 mag, pop-up cleats, compass, performance controls, stainless rub-rail, depthfinder, carpet, extinguisher system, cockpit cover, trim tabs, corsa-quick and quiet II, aluminum swim platform, purple and green graphics, McClain Aluminum trailer w/ aluminum mag wheels! They are trying to get me for $55,000.00 for that set-up. Just depends on the financing on monday. But I sure like to hagle, especially during boat show, they should want to give you a good deal. According to the sales manager I will have the first one in the south east Texas region, and possibly in Texas to have one, good be abunch of bull though!

Here in Iowa the 23 ft Outlaws are going from bid to high 50's, Depending on the options you add on. Good luck with your deal. Going to look at mine Saturday. Dealer has been closed for 3 weeks. Can't wait to see it.

January 13th, 2005, 10:47 PM
I am getting mine w/ a 496mag and all the options that come on an SST except the big guages and SST graphics, and a mcclain aluminum trailer w/ aluminum wheels for 54,900. Still waiting to here back, I think this is getting drawn out but we will see soon enough. If you look in the pictures section at the pics of the hou boat show you can see it next to a 25 outlaw, at the marine max booth!

Silly question, but why would you go ALA CARTE with the SST package and get everything but Livorsi Monster Guages and SST graphics. Is this boat an SST or not?
SST Boat Package:
Custom Steering Wheel* w/Colored Center Ring
Trim Tabs - Dual Ram w/Indicators
Custom Dash w/Livorsi Gauges & Colored Bezels*
Livorsi Platinum Controls w/Trim on Handle
Fire Extinguishing System
White Rub Rail w/ SS Insert
Rubber Mat under Rear Bench
SST Logo
SST Graphics*
Sunbrella Cockpit Cover*
* SST Package includes Red, Yellow, Blue, Purple, or Orange color options.

I am kinda curious myself. One of the reasons I got the Boss (similar to SST) package on mine was the better guages. I guess one of the great things about Baja is the ability to customize.
Ricky
January 14th, 2005, 12:16 PM
I'm also curious about those options, But it is a great looking boat. Going to see my tomorrow, I'll put pictures on Sunday.

i didn't pick the options, marine max outfitted the boat, i guess it is also missing the steering wheel, and the rubber mat under the rear bench. But I agree with you why go a la carte!

Ricky..thanx......Team, yes this is a non-SST boat, if you go in the photo section at the newest photos after the custom colored yellow outlaw, you can see the pics of it! It is back from the boat show now, I have been given hope to have this wraped up before the weekend by Marine Max...man I hope this is nerve racking!

Sorry about the bad news, there is always next year. Your 20 ft will look neat the the new stripes.

January 24th, 2005, 05:34 PM
Sorry to hear about the financing. Boats are a real liability to the banks because of the depreciation cliff etc. When I bought my 342, Bank of America required a marine mortgage. That required coast guard documentation so they could come repo it anywhere in the world.
We will see you at the Baja get together on Conroe.

Ricky, ain't it great!?? I can't believe it. Hope it stays this way...the 202 and the Honda are looking very lonely in the garage. Tempted to pull the 202 out, stick the muffs on the out drive and fire it up just for fun...but then again I don't feel like winterizing it again! Damn. Where are you located and where do you boat?
Ricky
February 3rd, 2005, 05:51 PM
We live and boat on Twin Lakes Iowa. West of Fort Dodge 25 miles. Smaller lake but a good time and lots of beer drinking. Where are you from ??
mikeandkimlovethelakeoftheo
February 4th, 2005, 02:49 PM
MANSON!!!!!!!!!!!
mikeandkimlovethelakeoftheo
February 4th, 2005, 02:50 PM
Ricky....do you have the Yellow Crownline? The reason I asked.... Kevin @ Mau Marine said someone from Twin Lakes was getting a 23....and was trading their LPX...and I thought, OH CHRIST THERE GOES THE NEIGHBORHOOD!!! HAHAH...
That poor little lake is going to get torn to shreads...between all of the wakeboarders throwing 5' wakes and the Bajas running 60+.....I heard from a guy that sells Ebbtides at Twin that they are trying to get a speedlimit enforced and posted.
Glad to see another local online!
Ricky
February 4th, 2005, 06:57 PM
Small world!! yes we did have the yellow crownline lpx. We loved it, but then all of a sudden there were 3 of them on the lake. (and you know the lake is not that big) so after drinking vodka & lemonades one day, we decided to trade it for a 23' outlaw. Let's see how many follow us this time. Ha ha Your boat is sharp, we have seen it float by. You guys were with Dave and Brenda one day. We just met them last year. fun people. We'll have to have a Twin Lakes Baja rally this summer. About the speed limit thing, they tried a few years ago to enforce the loud pipes and that never flew, so I can't see this one either. I think that the people complaining about fast boats should keep their grandkids (that have never driven on water) off of their jetski's and boats. That is what causes most of the problems out here!!!
mikeandkimlovethelakeoftheo
February 4th, 2005, 07:38 PM
I own a ski, but I agree...they are a problem on the lake...that and all the people who take their boats out 3-4 times a year and haven't the slightest clue what they are doing. It all starts at the ramp...I have never seen such a bunch of idiots. I could sit there on the south end all day and drink beer and watch dopes try to back in the lake.....then you have the people who can't get their boat off the trailer, or on the trailer...or get their truck stuck on the ramp or drop the trailer off of the ramp...on and on and on. Lets have a drink!
We are going to Dave and Brenda's place for the Bowl game...should be fun. They are great people.
Funny thing about your vodka and lemonade story. Kevin told us that word for word last weekend when we were at Mau...we laughed our butts off.
So are you getting the 23 or not?
We have been boating on twin for 7-8 years now...remember "Blue Moon"...my old Chris Craft?
Baja Rally? What, all three of us?
See you on the water! Or stop over some time! I wanna see that 23!
Ricky
February 4th, 2005, 07:51 PM
Yes, we bought a 23' outlaw. We ordered one at the end of the season. It came in, in October, but with the wrong graphics and a few other options that were wrong... so we reordered and it came in right before Christmas. We went up and saw it a couple of weeks ago. Took lots of pictures. Loved it!!! We will have it delivered in April. You will have to stop by and see it. Tell Dave and Brenda hi!
Ricky
February 5th, 2005, 02:28 PM
If all of you have been reading the posts the last couple of days with Mike and me. I just found out that Mike only lives 7 miles from me. Seen him on the lake last year but don't know him. But I'm sure there will be beer drinking this summer. Small world
mikeandkimlovethelakeoftheo
February 6th, 2005, 02:05 AM
Why wait till summer to drink?! Lets sit and watch the ice melt.
I can't believe Eddie had his boat out! My wife and I met Eddie and his wife and friends this past summer at LOTO.....here we sit with 3 feet of ice on the lake and he is 3 hours away with his boat in the water. Well, I can just about bet the girls didn't have g-strings on....but I suppose just going for a boat ride would be ok.
Does anyone on Twin know how to use an anchor? I think we are the only people who every have tried
BajaJack
February 6th, 2005, 05:57 PM
looks like a Twin Lakes Baja party should happen this summer!! we just purchased a 202 Baja Islander from Mau Marine and been getting advice from Mike, we normally stay up at Okoboji (just got back today from Mau) but would love to come to Twin Lakes and see your 23 Outlaw. I think Mau Marine should sponsor this party with all the $$$ we spent!!! we are only 30 miles away in Webster City.
Ricky
February 6th, 2005, 06:34 PM
Congrats on your 202. Who did you buy it from? sells person. Baja Twin Lakes party, Sounds great to me.
mikeandkimlovethelakeoftheo
February 7th, 2005, 03:50 AM
Ricky,
You were the talk of the party tonight with the 23...lots of excited people ( make that "WORRIED" )....hahaha...had a great time tonight. Everyone there knew you...why weren't you invited? You better get this straightened out with Brenda and Dave.
Where are you keeping the 23? Let me know when you get it home...
As far as a Baja party.....lets do it! Jack and I have been emailing a bit the past week. My wife and I go to Boji often also...usually camp at Emerson, Gull Point or stay at Lost Island Lake ( south and east of Boji ) where my father in law has a little trailer on the lake. THat is a great little lake for wakeboarding and skiing as it is usually pretty quiet. We haven't spent much time there the past couple years as we usually just go to Boji...more people and more to see. Lost Island would be a fun place if you had a bunch of people and several boats to go tie up and just hang out for the day. Nice camp grounds there too.
Jack, do you have a cabin on Boji?
Ricky
February 7th, 2005, 08:08 PM
Mike,
I think I know who was at the party, At least some of then. So everything they said I hate to admit is probably true. Will I hope not all of it. haha

Mike,
Did you get your boat at Mua from Kevin?
mikeandkimlovethelakeoftheo
February 8th, 2005, 01:58 AM
Yep,....Poor Kevin had to put up with us. Next time you are there, mention our names and see if he smiles or cringes. We were a bit of a pain in his a$$ but isn't that what customers should do? Keep salesmen in line? :) Kevin is a pretty good guy. Have you seen the owner or manager at Mau? WOW..:dancingjalepeno ..I did a double take and my wife smacked me. :spineyes
Nothing bad was said except things like "what in heck is he gonna do with a boat that big? I never saw him go over 10mph with his yellow boat"....stuff like that. They don't understand. Let em ride in their Larsons, Crownlines, Ebbtides, pontoons and ugly 1973 tri-hull POS. Blah blah blah........
I know I have seen you but I wouldn't know you if I saw you today. We should all get together and go to Sports Page or Lomitas and have a few drinks some night soon. Drop me an email sometime.

February 8th, 2005, 02:00 AM
Where did Jack go? You are invited too...lets start the Baja fun early. This cold crap stinks.

The people that see me on the weekend don't see me during the week when there are no boats. Then I like to see how fast it will go, " Everytime " I'm out. Weekends are for slow beer drinking. As for the Baja party, Talked to Kevin today and he said Julie would probably go for it at Mua expense. ???? We'll see.

Hey, why don't we meet at the little store at the lake some Friday night. They have happy hour. The couple that took it over last year are really nice. They are trying to turn it into more of a bar atmosphere. Let us know. Dave and Brenda were over last night. We showed them the pictures of the new toy. They said you are a knitpick just like me. :dancinbanana
mikeandkimlovethelakeoftheo
February 14th, 2005, 12:26 AM
KNITPICK? Why? No shoes in the boat? No chips that are ORANGE and leave greasy finger prints? Because I wax the boat after every trip to the lake? No beverages that are dark in color? :samurai Grape pop is a sob to clean up... HAHA....Everyone on this site knows the look people give you when you say " NO SHOES IN THE BOAT " The next person who gives me a hard time about no shoes in my boat is going to find me walking on their new livingroom furniture with golf shoes. :rollin
I wanna be there the first time you put the new 23 in the water so keep me posted.
Keep me posted on when you want to hook up at the store...sounds good!
Mike
Ricky
February 14th, 2005, 01:24 PM
that is too funny...I wax my boat all the time too, on the lift. I get very strange looks when people float by. I tell them I'm trying to get a few more mph out of it. We always wipe it down when we get done boating from top to bottom. I guess when you spend that much money for a "toy", you want to keep it nice. I don't think Dave meant any harm, he gives me a hard time too.
mikeandkimlovethelakeoftheo
February 14th, 2005, 02:26 PM
Oh, I know Dave was just giving me a hard time...I get it all the time from everyone.
On the opposite end of the spectrum though, were some people I met at the Ozarks last summer. They were staying at the same resort as we were. They had just bought a new 23 or 24' Chaparral boat. Very nice open bow...loaded with options, even a portapotti/changing room under the helm on the port side. They didn't even have license stickers on it yet....this was their first week out in it....still had the Illinois paper plate stuck in the window. This boat couldn't have had more than 10-20 hours on it and it was literally beat to hell. The stainless steel rubrail was beat and smashed....The gelcoat was gouged and scratched. They had been hauling 12-13 people around in it all week...it was full of beer cans, chips smashed and ground into the carpet, shoe marks and holes all over the white upholstery.....spider poop all over it ( yes...they have big spiders in MO )....it just made me sick. They were going to all of the bars and restaurants at LOTO...tying up to the docks with NO BUMPERS. WTF?? THEY ARE NUTS! A good share of the docks I won't even go near because of the rough water, let alone tie up to...and those that I do tie up to are well padded and my bumpers are properly placed.
By the time the week was over, this brand new boat was in worse condition that most that are 10 years old. Some people should have used contraception and not given birth to people like this!

Come H_ _ _ or high water we will be in our new boat on April 9th (this is a few days after we get back, so life is turning around). Rick, it took me a little time to find the sweet spot. If I remember correctly there are four hash marks on the gauge and I think I usually run mine between the 2nd and 3rd. Every boat is a little different so you will probably just have to play with it till you find the right spot.

Hey ricky, don't know about the steering but watch the outdrive fluid level VERY CLOSE the first few times out. When we got our 202, the reservoir was full, but slowly creeped down to almost empty before I caught it. I was told there maybe be air pockets in the outdrive....but since then I have had no issues... Even when changing the fluid ( three times last season ) the level hasn't changed. I could imagine the power steering could have the same problem and it just wasn't topped off.
no Boji for me this weekend :( I have a bathroom to remodel. PI$$ me off!

Yes, we finally was able to take the 202 out and check him out, I was Very Happy with the whole "package" however the Mau Marine techs wanted to try a 19 pitch Highfive prop ( I was unhappy with the take-off and getting on plane) but the 19 Highfive hit the rev-limiter at 55 mph, a quick conference with the salesman, parts man and tech got things going to a 21 pitch Highfive which was advised by people on the Baja.com sites. ( I love the "holeshot" of the Highfive over the 23 pitch Vengence) overall, I had a GREAT 1st outting and can't wait till next weekend!!!! Thanks to all the board members for all the input and advice!!!!
Ricky
April 25th, 2005, 12:00 AM
Jack,
Did you go out today or yesterday? Today wasn't to bad. Did you see Mark out on his boat. What speed did you get out of the 21 pitch? Sounds like you had a great time. Hopefully next weekend will be nicer.

April 25th, 2005, 11:40 AM
Jack,
What is your top end with the 21 pitch prop ?
BajaJack
April 25th, 2005, 09:42 PM
I was only able to "test" the 19 pitch Highfive prop, it hit the rev-limiter (5150 rpm) at 55-56 mph. I found out that Mau Marine techs had test run the boat and made the choice to start with a 19 pitch, I had given them the full info from this board but I had complained that holeshots sucked (BAD) and I am sure they wanted me happy. also they had sold the 21 p. Highfive that I wanted and promised to reorder one today, so maybe after next weekend I can have better results for you, Mike, when I get the 21p and it shows that it will work, we will "slip it on" your Islander as I really liked the way it gets on plane and accelerates as opposed to the stock Vengence 23p.
mikeandkimlovethelakeoftheo
April 25th, 2005, 11:26 PM
Did you ever really run her with the 23 vengence? What top end did you get there and what RPM? Maybe you never had the chance.
I knew, after running ours that the 19 was too dramatic of a change from the 23. Our old boat ran a 21 and we switched to a 19 and I was devistated at the loss on top.

On the right side of your engine compartment where you have your storage bags what is the oval hole for? My boat also has that.
Rick
haulinvols
April 26th, 2005, 09:14 PM
Ricky, it is for anchor storage. I tried to use it on mine till I got a Box Anchor (http://www.slideanchor.com/box.asp) , I keep that under the seat since it folds up.
BajaJack
April 26th, 2005, 09:58 PM
Mike, I got some good advice from the Houston Prop. board that said that to do everything that I want to do ( watersports, bar to bar with 5-8 people, top speed runs with 2-3 people, and cruising) that I would need 2 props and I agree. the 21p Highfive will do 75% of what we want, then pop on the 23p Lazer 2 when the "boys" are out playing, yes we did run the 23p Vengence (5 people, 60 degree temp. 1/4 tank of fuel) and I almost backed out of the deal and purchased another jet boat. I am sure the 21p Highfive will work well for our use.
Ricky
April 26th, 2005, 10:53 PM

Yep...the hole is for an anchor. But it will scratch the hell out of the jelcoat if you don't properly pad the holder...I took some rubber grommets and placed them around the anchor where they make contact with the gelcoat...works great.
I am gonna stick with one prop...I don't race anyone...and as doggy as the 23 vengence is it still pops me up on skis or the wakeboard a-ok. I heard a 22p 4 blade lazer prop also works very well on the 202...

"Mike, I got some good advice from the Houston Prop. board that said that to do everything that I want to do ( watersports, bar to bar with 5-8 people, top speed runs with 2-3 people, and cruising) that I would need 2 props and I agree. the 21p Highfive will do 75% of what we want, then pop on the 23p Lazer 2 when the "boys" are out playing, yes we did run the 23p Vengence (5 people, 60 degree temp. 1/4 tank of fuel) and I almost backed out of the deal and purchased another jet boat. I am sure the 21p Highfive will work well for our use. "
Jack,
You don't want a Laser. That is another really low end prop from Merc. You should look at getting a Mirage Plus as your high speed prop. It will perform much better than the laser or vengeance. Check ebay...

Pointerman...remember, Jack and I are dealing with 5.0/Alpha power....not BB muscle. Someone had told me at one point that the Mirage Plus is too large in diameter for the smaller engines to efficiently turn and they had their Mirage Plus tweaked....actually removed some of the diameter of the prop to get it to perform on ther 6.2L....do the SB engines have enough power to turn the larger diameter blade?

Pointerman, thanks for the input, I will try to locate a Mirage Plus, do you think the 5.0 Alpha 1.62 ratio at 1200 ft above sea level could handle a 21p Mirage Plus (23p is to large) ???? Mike and Kim, yes I will be up to Boji this weekend, (my 21p. Highfive finally came in) please check your e-mail for my phone # so we can talk "BAJA" Thanks to all of the 20 and 202 owners for ALL of the input!!! I just found out that our neighbors around the corner from us traded their Yamaha jet boat for a 2003 Baja 202 Islander !! I think it was OKOBOJI 242 boat traded in at Mau Marine. the more Bajas the better!!

I heard that another guy from lower gar bought it, the more the better (that should make everyone in our little area wake up). I will be up this weekend, look us up (not many 242's on Minnewashta-infact I am the only one you can find us if you look 12 o'clock as you come under the bridge onto Minnewashta). I have one problem I have about 3 inches of clearance under the bridge going up to upper gar guess I better load er up with more beverages.

Darrell,
No we are not going to go. We always just stay on the lake here. My boat is on a lift and my trailer is in the shed. To much of a pain to get from here to there. But thanks for asking, If you are ever close to Twin Lakes Iowa stop by it's a great lake for boating and drinking beer.

Mike and Jack,
I have a 20 OL with a 350 MAG (only 40 more hp). I am currently testing with a 25" Mirage Plus (stock, not labbed yet). I am turning it at 4400 RPMs right now, but have not tested it yet with the air flow mods I have recently made. Hope to do that this Sunday. Once I get all of those factors stabilized I plan on sending the prop out to get reworked. At minimum I will need to come down 1" in pitch, possibly 2". I'll leave that to the experts once I am ready for the work. Also thinking about finding someone to rework the electronics. Merc upped the RPMs on my motor to 5200 this year so they must think it is safe to rev higher. Currently rev limiter is set to 5000 rpm. My 23" high five hits my rev limiter pretty easily.

And how did you end up with a 350 mag in your boat?
Pointerman1967
May 9th, 2005, 06:44 PM
Bought is gently used (20 hours) from a dealer in PA. The story was that it was a retirement gift for a Baja executive. He used it for a bit and sold it. It has several non-factory options for a 20. Had it shipped here to CA and have been enjoying it for a year and a half now.

Interesting! I know a guy with a 6.2 he is thinking about pulling out of his boat and swapping for a big block....No way in heck I would make the swap but how tough would it be to put the 6.2 in the place of the 5.0?

Does anyone have a problem with the steering at low speed? Mine has a clicking sound and it catches when you turn the wheel. It doesn't do it the first hour but after that it does. Would this be a bad power steering pump?
Rick

Call Mau and jack 'em up a little. They will take care of it...sounds like the pump to me.
Ricky
May 10th, 2005, 02:15 PM
We already called Mau. No one will ever call us back. Plus we have no trailer right now...long story!!! The one service guy said that they would come down and fix it, the other one said no that they don't do that. But our problem is, they have our trailer... so we can't haul it up there if we wanted to. We are kind of getting tired of getting the run around. From day one when we ordered the first boat things have been screwed up. It's getting very old.
mikeandkimlovethelakeoftheo
May 10th, 2005, 02:18 PM
Hmmmmm....lets see. Mau has your trailer. Mau won't come fix the boat. You can't take the boat to get it fixed. Want me to go get your trailer?
Ricky
May 10th, 2005, 03:08 PM
o.k. here's the story...The trailer is in Illinois or wherever Heritage trailers are made. When Kevin brought our boat, the trailer was full of rust. Yes, it was suppose to be a brand new trailer. Why did they put the boat on the trailer if it was this way, who knows. Anyway, Kevin pulled it back with him to Okoboji and then the paint rep came to look at it. He pulled it back to the factory to have it sandblasted and repainted. So a trailer that usually gets pulled a total of 15 miles (yes that's right 15 and that's pushing it) is going to have a whole shitload of miles on it. We were going to have it painted lime green instead of yellow so we know for sure that they did repaint it all, but it is titled under a yellow trailer, so they said we have to stay with that color. We are going to make Collin or Julie sign a statement that says that if anything goes wrong with the paint as long as we own it, they will cover it. So, we told Kevin that if our cable on our lift would happen to break some night, he would be driving down a trailer. Then this steering problem...this should of been taken care of when they test drove it for over an hour up there. I don't think they checked anything but how fast they could get it up to. Yes we are picky, but come on, a rusted trailer the first day out. We have always gotten Prestige trailers with our 4 other boats and never had a problem. This whole deal has been screwed up from day one. That's our luck!!

Mike,
That should be a straight swap. The 6.2 is over the Alpha drives 300 HP max rating, but if you didn't gun it from a stand still all the time the drive would probably do just fine for more years than you would own the boat. I wish mine came with a 6.2. That would be much better. :)

o.k. as for my steering noise, I always felt that it was in the steering wheel, so I pulled back the rubber on the steering wheel and shot some %%WORD19%@ in it, guess what, the steering is fixed and the noise is gone.
Mau did call me back after a nice email I sent them. They were willing to come and get my boat and bring it back the next day, if it was something major.

Absolutely not. At least not here in the Ozarks. I guess every water hole has it own make up of minerals. But here, white vinegar on a rag takes that black soot and baked on mineral deposits right off.
I keep it on my boat in a spray bottle. When I am out swimming I have the wife throw it down wipe that stuff right off. Heck, if I have a whole line of my buddies boats rafted up with us I even clean theirs too. It works that easy.
Cheap too! Try it and see if it doesn't work that easy for you. Let me know,

You know what? Actually, when you went up to the shop to get your fenders air'd up on Sunday, I did chat with your wife about your boat setting in the water all week. I gave her some tips on getting the tea stain line off your boat from time to time throughout the week. While I didn't actually do the work, I was trying to help.;)

A friend asked me the other day why isn't the tack oil filled like the speedometer? Does anyone know?
Rick

May 31st, 2005, 05:56 PM
I believe the theory behind an oil-filled speedometer is that the fluid provides a dampening effect, preventing the gauge from incessant jumping and hindering readability. Dampening would be undesirable in a tachometer, where you would want to see any flickering as an indication of timing issues.

No marks on my steering wheel. Are you holding on that hard?:D
I'm having a small problem, though. Almost every time I turn off the battery switch (engine off, of course), I blow the trim drive glass fuse. It's supposed to be a 50A, but I have a 30A in since 50A is hard to come by. Very weird.

I don't think I ever told you but when I got my boat. I had the SST graphics put on the deck like the 25 Outlaw and bigger boats Looks really cool, Also had the vents on the back done in purple to match the purple on the boat. Tryed to put pictures on the site but did't work for some reason.
