A friend of mine in Florida sent this link to me today. Just goes to show you what happens when you drive a boat past your competency level. A waste of a perfectly good $350,000.00 boat. You will notice at the speeds they were traveling offshore that no one in the boat had a life jacket on. Now I am not the MOST safety conscious person, but I do now when traveling in speeds in excess of a 100mph in offshore conditions, you can never be too careful. Hell even in the APBA they wear safety gear. Maybe I just love life too much to not wear one at those speeds. You can not swim if your knocked out. :nono www.sptimes.com/2004/01/2...e__w.shtml (http://www.sptimes.com/2004/01/28/Tampabay/Friend_says__rogue__w.shtml)

They did alot of digging in that article about the owners and passengers background. Sounds like he was showing off to the (2) hotties he had in his boat. Another senseless accident.

Agreed, however, who has not tried to do that before? I don't get the "no life jacket" thing though...that is just no smart when running those kinds of speeds. Another sad day in the boating world and one more accident for boat haters to say see I told you so.

Don that is exactly my point. I (like everyone at some time) have launched off a wake or two in my day, but on the river the landing is a bit more certain. Offshore it is a different subject. I lost a friend in a boating accident similar to this one for the same reason, no life jacket. The few times I have been in a powerboat offshore, the owner insisted we all wear jackets, no exceptions. After a day of runnin his cafe-racer I got to tell you, at the speeds we were traveling and the seas mother nature was kicking up, I for one was glad I had one on. If we had an accident..... well lets just say I know how bad a belly flop feels off the deck of my boat, I don't want to try one at 80-100 mph with nothing to keep me floating when I am knocked out.

Yeah, I would agree with you. I have never had the opportunity to go boating offshore in a real power boat. I have taken a few "speed" rides down at Lake of the Ozarks with Bob Morgan and life jackets were always provided. At those kinds of speed anything could happen.
