I am looking for either a 280 or a 320 Force...1988 to 1990 models. It doesnt have to be perfect, but I would like at least decent. I have found a few, but they are going to have to do some serious price adjusting. Dont care what motors are in either as long as they are BBC, but it must have Bravo 1 outdrives. I am going to sell my Islander 226 during the winter with the 540 in it or I will pull it out and put in a fresh 454. I will have it listed here sometime in October. I am talking to one place about a 320 that they have, but we are tossing numbers back and forth right now. They need to realize that we are talking about a 18 year old boat and not last years 33 Outlaw...I aint paying 46K for it...period.
If I dont find a 280 or a 320...I might consider a 25 Outlaw, 272 or 275 in a single or a 302 in a twin. I dont want to drop alot of $$$ in the boat, because I will be dumping a ton of $$$ in a new motor(s) for whatever I end up with...no matter what the year model or the number of hours...the original motor is history.
Any help would be appreciated...thanks

I don't know how far you want to travel to get a boat. I know there are atleast 3 or 4 280's for less than 20k. Can't say I have seen many 320's lately, but you are right there is no way I would pay that kind of cash for one. I do know of an 87' 320 that is listed for less than 18k.

Travel for the "right" boat is not a problem guys...as long as it is in North America somewhere. Alot of boats I have seen are pretty trashed out. Found a 320 this afternoon for 5K but it would never survive a move from all the rotted wood.
Thanks for the links...now to check them out.

That boat does look niceand I would like to see it in the flesh...sorta speak. If you want, you can tell your friend that I will give him a call later and try to arrange a time to go up there. It is alittle older than I wanted to go, but once I see it, I can decide one way or the other. I am going out to Charlotte, NC Oct 4 to eyeball another boat. The boat only has 150 hours total or is that what he has put on it?

I just bought a 29 outlaw and have a 98 272 boss. It has less than 200 hrs original on the boat. People still don't believe me when I tell them the year. Because you plan on speeding money on a motor we could talk about different ways to buy the boat. It now has a 502 with 730hp and 775fpt(dyno) and 6 yes 6hrs on motor. would be willing to sell with for the right price or without.

It is very close, but I found another one up in New Hampshire. I am going up there Nov 1 and have a look at it...then I got to choose between the 2. Color wise, they are identical, but $3000.00 different in price. The other thing that is not all that important to me is that the one in Charlotte has regular 7.4 motors and the one in New Hampshire has 454 mag motors. Both are very close to total hours.

Thx Eddie...I went and had a look at the boat. It looks great, but the price has scam all over it. No sure on that, but the price does not appear to be right. I sent an email out on it, so I will wait and see what it says.
Going to New Hampshire Saturday to look at the last 280ES. I understand it is cold up there, so I dont know if they winterized it or not. If I cant do a water run with it...winterized or not...its out of the question. Leaving there and going back to Charlotte for another look at the 280ES there...then home and try to decide.

I agree, I checked his feedback and he's sold other boats for decent prices. He has a phone number in the add too, I just about called him on it as it seems like a great deal. The gimbal ring even looks to be factory hp500 parts making me thing the motors were factory installed - it seems like a great deal if it's legit.

For the prices that folks are selling boats for I dont know if would be that concerned. Folks are trying to get out of any extras they have laying around, not to mention that christmas is coming and that boat is in Michigan where the economy is sucking right now. If that boat is what it says it is, its a 70+MPH boat already. The only thing is the rear seat is only good for 3 folks. That can be changed but if you run alot in Rough water it makes it very nice.

Sweet. I have sent email and waiting.
A friend of mine called them yesterday. The boats is bigger than what he's looking for. This is a marine dealership that has the boat. He talked to the service writer there. He said the boat is very well represented, a couple of minor gel coat repairs needed, yellow in the seats starting to fade, stitching of the sun deck starting to pull apart, gauges starting to fog, boat sat on a lift and one drive appears to have sat slightly in the water. All very typical stuff on a 10 year old boat. He said it also appears both engines have been apart, one hour meter shows 30+ hours and the other shows 270. Both engines have wrench marks on the bolts. Overall the boat is in very good condition for a 1999. He stated that they have been buying boats from distressed customers and reselling them. He also stated that the economy there is hurting big time and there are some real deals to be had. They are a trailer dealer and will let a new trailer go with the boat at cost. Although the boat needs a little TLC at this price it is a hell of a buy.

The people in New Hampshire have sold the boat that I was going up to see. They sent me an email stating that someone had made a bid and they took it, So I wont be going up that way tomorrow. I guess I could out bid them a they did send me the price that the other person offered, but I dont consider that to be on the up & up, so I am not going to bid on it anymore. I am still going to go back and have another look at the one in Charlotte. It might be the better deal in the long run as it has less hours that the on in New Hampshire.

Thanks Fleg...I saw this boat about a month and a half ago...talked to them and at that time some dude told me they wanted 28K for it. I just laughed and told him good luck. I like the exterior color of it, but the yellow interior is alittle much for me. I was really looking forward to seeing that 280ES in New Hampshire, but those guys sold it out from under me 2 days before I was suppose to go up there. Pissed me off somewhat but whatever. I havent done anything yet, but I still like the 280ES in Charlotte and more than likely will end up getting that one. The "war department" told me that she wants the Islander sold BEFORE I get another boat. I think she has some merit in that, because we dont have a place to keep 2 boats. I have mine listed locally here with the 540 in it. Many people want it...especially those that know it and have seen it run, but they want me to give it to them and I am not in the chairity mood with it. Basically...someone is going to get a Hell of a motor with a boat wraped around it. I am still sniffing around looking but I have noticed something the past couple of weeks and that is that there are a buttload of twins coming up in the market. The prices are coming down so waiting a bit might be the thing to do. I talked to one guy last month about a 302 and he wanted 49.5K for it. He called me Tuesday and offered it to me for 35K, but I told him no...still too much. I think the twins prices are going to come down considerably and the singles are going to go up slightly. I know I want a twin, but I have also seen some good buys on 272's and 275's...either of which I would not mind having...maybe, if the price is right...a 25 Outlaw. I would just have to put alittle more HP in a motor for it.

I do most of my boating on Higgins Lake but do make an occasional trip to the Saginaw Bay and Torch Lake. I think with a bigger boat I would venture to the larger lakes more often. It seems everytime I do make it to the big water it is horribly winding with big waves, not good in a 20' boat.
I think 25OL's have been dropping in price fairly rapidly but as of recently there seem to be more 29's coming available. I cant see the prices leveling out anytime soon so I wonder if it would be better to wait till spring or early summer of 09 to really make a purchase?

My buddy just picked up a 1998 25 Outlaw, 454 Mag (carb) that is spotless for $25k on a trailer. Seemed like a good deal to me.

Wayne,
Just keep in mind what kind of boating you do. If you are in small lakes the 29OL is going to limit you. If you are like me and only like big water, the 29 is much better. 25OL and 272 are still getting what I consider big money, 29's are dropping in price like a stone. Pretty much any twin is going way down in price. You can pick up 280's for less than 20K, and there are a few real nice ones around.

Good advice, but I'm one of the few that went twins then went back...admittedly in a cruiser but just wasn't happy with the cost of feeding and maintaining 2 engines. Maintenance was a pain too. If I boated exclusively on big water I might go back to twins but there are lots of advantages to a single engine boat, especially for lake boaters.

No real rush $hooter as I will not be home from Iraq till mid dec. I would not be able to begin to look at till Jan sometime anyway. I still am a little hesitant to buy twin with gas prices capable of going back to $4.00/Gal. I can still have as much fun as I want ALL the time with a single.
Hey Wayne...this is a 25 Outlaw that I was considering, but decided that it was not as big as I want to go. Look at the rear bench seat in this boat...this is what caught my attention. This is the only 25 outlaw that they have right now...http://www.erboats.com/inventory.htm

One thing I would have to say about that boat.....HOT :22_yikes:
Looks like it has some serious oxidation as well.

Red is tough color to keep from oxidizing. Had a checkmate years ago that I would have to wax it twice a week to keep up on it. It is also a hard color to sell so that could work in your favor as far as the price. Paul what ever happened to the one in Vermont with the twin prochargers? I think it was a 30. I saw it on ebay months back and it said that the stringers where delaminating? Did you ever go see it?

I canceled my plans to go look at that boat. I saw some pics and I think it was going to be major durgery to get that puppy back inshape. I dont remember exactly, but I think the price "was" 32k to 34K and then when the owner found the issues, the price went to something like 20K or so. I looked at everything and printed some pics out to take over to a friend of mine who does fiberglass on vettes and boats and he told me that he wouldnt do it. Said he would have topull the boat apart to fix it and that to expect alot of money to do it. That turned me off on it, but I have to say :applse: to the owner for posting his finding the problems when he was winterizing his boat. That tells me that the guy is straight up and honest, but I dont want a project at any price.

I have sent for info on the 302 and the 280 is totally out of the picture. The 280 might make someone a nice boat, but it will be a major project...not me. I saw the 302 yesterday and emailed them about it. If I dont hear anything back, I will call them tomorrow. I found a 1995 32 Calibur with 4 bolsters and 500's that has an interest in making a trade fairly close to me. I went up to Oklahoma City yesterday to look at another 95 Calibur with 500's. They have made an offer for my Islander, but the Calibur has some issues in the cabin I am not happy with. The head liner is torn and hanging loose almost all over and the rear bench needs recovering. The wind screen is coming loose and is actually sticking up on the starboard side. They told me that all it needed was a bolt coming up thru the bottom into the trailing edge, but something is telling me that there is more to that. The fridge is missing along with some broken hinges. They didnt start it for me, so I am not real interested in it. I am busting my hump looking for a guy that I talked to in San Marcus, Texas a couple of months ago. He has a cherry 29 that I would buy over the phone., but I just lost all the info on his boat and stuff. It was on e-bay and he pulled it because the reserve was not met. When I called, he made an offer and I told him to let me think on it and then dumbass me lost his contact information...grrrrrr. I am going to put an ad in the newspaper tomorrow and hope he reads it in the boat class section.

I sent an email on that 29, so now I guess its just a waiting game...but it has a slight order of SCAM on it to me...maybe not.
Saturday, a buddy of mine went going with me yesterday on his GoldWing and we left out about 9 am going to Roger, Arkansas to look at another 32 Calibur with 525's in it. We had made a stop in Sherman at the IHOP for some breakfast and the guy that owns the dealership called me anf told me not to come up. He said the weather took a drastic nasty turn and that it was sleeting with light rain and snow. That killed the trip after about 125 miles, but no biggie. I called another place on Lake Hubbard and we went over there and looked at a Boss 302 with 454 mags. The boat was filthy dirty and needed a serious cleaning, but the motors looked good and sounded good. The thing I dont like about it is that the fuel pumps work off the sea pumps so that crap has to go. Everyone that I have talked to that had that setup shad trouble with it. He asked me if I would like to make an offer as it was his brother-in-laws boat. I told him that I would give him 22k for it. He said he would contact the brother-in-law and get back to me...so I'm on another waiting game with this.

Update here... I am going to a dealership on Jan 3, 2009 and take a final look at a 1995 32 Calibur with REAL blue 500's in it. If all is well, then I plan to make an offer and go from there. If the offer is accepted, then I expect the 500's to be up for sale soon as I will pull them and put in 540's. I do know and had it confirmed, that the 500"s just had a complete refresh after something like 285 hours. The motors have just under 20 hours on them now after refresh. If anyone is interested in the 500's...let me get the boat first and then we can go from there.
Many...many thanks to Dave Lockhart...aka...MrBaja for all his help of getting information on this boat. Everything appears to be on the up & up so I am going to have a final look and possibly pull the trigger if we can get together on the numbers. I know more info on the boat than I should I guess...meaning I know what this dealer paid for it, which gives me room to make a bid on it.
On another note...Myself and my entire "tribe" wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a safe New year. If you are traveling and you come thru Fort Worth...gimmie a holler.

I vinyl cover would work great but there still is a bit much yellow on the interior to contend with also. Might be a bit much to re-upholster.
I still am very interested due to price.
Maybe save the cosmetic money to replace 496 with a 525EFI:dance:

I completely agree with you Wayne.....it's not so much the hull and deck that is the issue for me.........it's the cabin that would drive me nuts.
Can vinyl interior be stained or painted after the initial coloring??? Might be an option if it's possible.
It is definitely a chance to truly have a custom boat if your willing to spend the money on it.

Wayne I really think that you should consider my 272. It has more room in the cockpit area and is just as nice. By the time you spend the time and money changing motors and the color (which is obvious you don't like) you will be at more money than mine and still running 10mph slower. Please contact me for more info. I am spending more money on my new boat and would really like to move the 272. It has less than 200hrs on the hull and the engine set up is new.

Did Shu give you a dyno sheet on that motor?

I bet you do, if it was a bit newer I would be more serious about looking at it. I am looking at really 03 or newer. I dont want to take anthing away from your boat or what you've done but if it were in the 20's on price I also would look at it closer.

Paul, what the heck ever happened with your search? Did ya call it off and i missed the announcement? If not here's a 302 without the power and drives:
1997 302 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BAJA-30-2-OFF-SHORE-NO-ENGINES-BANK-REPO_W0QQitemZ110380611988QQcmdZViewItemQQptZPower_Motorboats?hash=item110380611988&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=72%3A317%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318)

I'm still looking, but I have backed off just a bit...waiting to see just what the economy is going to do before I drop a wad of money. But if something sweet came by that I could steal...then screw the economy and I would jump on it. Right now I am so busy, I dont have time to look much. Been helping a TBM member by replacing his stringers in a 91 Bandit as well as adding more strength with fiberglass so that he can put this 540 I am building for him. I have toned it down alittle so that he will still have a minimum of 650 ponies in there and then I think his son is going to want a motor. I am pretty sure he is going to want a motor after Dad outruns him..lmao...but we'll see what happens. After I finish this motor, I have 4 more to do with someother people trying to make a decision...new boat...new motor...want payments...no payments...etc.
Got 4 weeks and several of us are jumping on the scooters and going up to Colorado again for at least a week...maybe longer. Anyone with a scooter sorta close that wants to go...come on...or we can meet up somewhere along the way.

I see. Hmmmm...... I've been on the fence also but when i add little things to my 260 and "bling" it up, which i've done this winter, i decide to keep it and the no payments. Just gotta figure how to get more speed. I still have your parts list you sent me a couple of years ago to beef my little 7.4 up a little. Damn how i would like to have one of those 540's though.

I will get you some pics of this motor I am doing for John. Its a budget motor...no aluminum heads, but it will still have more than enough power to make his Bandit fly.

I'd definitely like to see that. Shoot me an email if you can of the specifics on it.

Here are a few pics of the short block...all I have done at the moment. This is a Dart Big M block, JE forged pistons, Manley H-Beam forged rods, Callis forged stroker crank, and Total seal rings. Bearings are Clevite 77 and the heads are Merlin Rectangular Port.
Some technical stuff...
1. Connecting rod bearing to crankshaft clearance is .0025 inch.
2. Connecting rod side clearance is .028 inch +/- .005 inch.
3. 7/16 rod bolts, 8740 material, torqued to 90 pounds feet w/bolt stretch of .006 (average)
4. Total weight per rod is 811 grams, 571 on the big end & 240 on the pin end
5. Piston clearance measured 1/2 inch up from the bottom of the skirt is .0045 inch.
6. Crank is cross drilled and chamfered & radius clearanced for better oiling.
7. Motor will be internal balanced.
8. Decals and such will add an additional 20 to 25 HP...if displayed properly.

I am pretty sure that this is the same boat I saw a couple of months back when the owner still had it. If it is...there are some issues with the motors. The trailer was included with the boat back then...now I'm sure national will want to rip someone off to add the trailer.

The problem with this 302 with no motors or drives is that it is going to be real expensive to get it back up and running. If I was to put a pair of 540 motors in it, I would be looking at a cost of around 32K for both motors, than around 9K for drives and an additional 5K for bellhousings and misc stuff...and none of this will include any labor. Dont forget to add in the cost of the boat as it is, which will make the boat cost scare the Hell out of 60K for a total expense for a '96 model boat...way too much for me. I wouldnt pay more than 6K for the boat and trailer as it sits.
