"While the final MSRP won't be released until just before the car goes on sale, Lyons told dealers that early guesses of $250,000 are way off. According to Lyons, the MSRP will be "substantially less than $150,000," which, he explained, will make it substantially less than its nearest supercar competitor the Ferrari 360 Modena."

The new Ford GT is definitely a cool car! But Ford brought back the name to enhance it's image. They hype the model and only build a few, charging extraordinary prices, make it in limited quantities, which drives up the price and demand! Kind of like the Dodge Viper.
Once the hype wears off, if the prices aren't still rediculously high that you have to be a millionaire to own one, maybe you'll see some on the street.
When the Corvette ZR1 first came out in 1990, the same thing happened. It was hyped up, touted as the World Beater. And it was just that. An American car that could run with Lambo's, Porche, Ferarri, etc. (I said run with, not outrun) ;)
Celebrities, sports stars, and anybody else with too much money paid like 50% over MSRP just to have one! And guess what? I bought one in 1999 with 12,000 miles on it, in pristine condition with original tires, for $28K! :)
Some were selling in 1990 for over $100 grand!! :biggrin
Again I love the new Ford GT but it's obvious what they're doing.

You're the original? That's rare these days, to find a ZR1 and the original owner! Congrats! What color combo and year model is it?
I will be looking at ZR1s again after the move. The prices are still at rock bottom. There are several for sale on the www.zr1.net (http://www.zr1.net) website in the ZR1s for sale section. It's amazing how many there are in the "never driven in the rain, always stored in a climate controlled garage" category, which is perfect for me! I think, "thanks for saving it for me all these years!"

my buddy just came back from a car show that had the Ford they were saying around 148K - 150 K I have always been a chevy man but what I realy want to see is if they decide to make the New Shelby Cobra. That would be a KILLER car. But when you really sit back and look at things I cant see spending more than 60,000 for a sports car. Oh well. I will stay on track for the new 250 diesel and stay focused on BAJA boats. Like the Old man says to me when we are in the garage, " be happy with what you have"
And I am Happy:party

I heard there is a new engine in the works for the 2005 or 06 Corvette. It will probably be a DOHC engine, ALA LT-5. It should make close to 500 HP. It will be a cut above the Z06.
Maybe they'll call it a ZR1 again? LT6 C6?
The Z06 should be available again soon with about 450 HP. It will basically be a warmed over version of the current Z06 powerplant, not a DOHC.
So hopefully there will be two "super Corvettes" soon.
These are just speculation based on discussions with other Corvette owners. I have not read about any of the above rumors in any publications.
;) Time will tell....

I could run even all day against a stock ZR-1 in SCCA Autocross competition (http://www.scca.org/amateur/solo2/index.html) with my SVO Mustang in 1992-1993 with nothing more than a coil spring change. And my "World Beater" had 4 cylinders (140 c.i.).
The problem inherit with the ZR-1 and most Vettes is they were too heavy. Nice cars regardless and the engines did have an exhaust note all their own ... back then.
I do like that Ford brought back the Icon of the 60's with the Ford GT and all indications are they are bringing back the Shelby Cobra as well. Chances are if you couldn't afford them the 1st time around, you probably can't the second time either. :(
Awesome cars, but I've priced insurance on a Mustang Cobra and about fell over. I can't imagine what these two would require.

A spring change won't make a Stang run 175 MPH.
The ZR1 is more about top speed and durability.
www.zr1.net/ZR1_records.html (http://www.zr1.net/ZR1_records.html)
I remember the SVO Mustangs. They were pretty trick!
There were specific suspension settings for the ZR1 that would net 1+ G cornering forces. Track settings. The ZR1
was built on early 1980's C4 chassis so I don't doubt your Mustang could hang with them in the corners. And yes weight is everything when it comes to carving curves!

Corvettes are great cars. I've had 3 over the years. Very passionate following, just like Baja!
SVO's were fast cars. Amazing what a 4 cylinder with a turbo could do. Same with the 87 Buick GN I owned, only that had a six. It was top speed limted but it was MUCH quicker though the 1/4 than any of the Vettes I had.
Forget the GT - bring back the Pantera! Loved that car when I was a kid.

Pit,
I wasn't saying they had problems. I was merely stating they were a heavy car.
SVO 2881 lb
ZR-1 3465 lb
Put 600 lb extra weight in the boat and you notice a difference in performance as well.

Had one of the last 1986s with the cast heads, 86 was a split year half with cast, the other with aluminum. Totally redid the car. Installed several go fast goodies. I miss that car so much it hurts. It's funny, it is the only sports car I have ever been comfortable in. White with red interior, that only a corvette enthusiast would love. My dream car however is this....adcache.collectorcartrade...849114.htm (http://adcache.collectorcartraderonline.com/10/1/4/64849114.htm) Anyone want to donate to the cause? I can dream can't I.

Interesting note on the ZR-1 record is that that the car was limited to only75% of its power and had to carry any part required to fix the car during the run.
24 Hours Endurance @ 175.885 MPH for 4,221.256 Miles (24 Hours Endurance @ 175.885 MPH for 4,221.256 Miles) Im sure that the record would still stand today if their was no limit on the power.

Pit,
Too bad the Tommy Morrison ZR1's were not stock. They were purpose built SCCA Showroom Stock race cars built for testing. They weighed a mere 2840 lb. Here's the remainder of the tech stuff:
Two cars were built and tested during the fall and winter. The Mobil/EDS/Goodyear Corvette chassis were stock except for: no side mirrors, lowered front end, reinforced front air dams fitted with ultrasonic "anti-animal" whistles, no rear antiroll bars, transmission and differential oil coolers, 3.07:1 axle ratio on the ZR-1 and a 2.72:1 for the L98 car and 25.5x12.0-17 Special Radial tires that Goodyear built for this effort. Replacing the passenger seats were EDS telemetry systems operated by GM's Service Technology Group. The cars were heavy carrying a roll cage, other safety equipment and 48 gal. fuel cells. As FIA rules require "non-consumable" spare parts (brake rotor, radiator hose, alternator, etc.) to be carried in the car, 300 lbs. of spares were in two suitcases lashed to the cages' rear tubes. Replacements had to come from this stock and, if a failure was such that a car could not get back to the pits; the driver, working alone, had to fix the car. Ab's ghost to smiled even more.
The LT-5 was picked right off Mercury Marine's Stillwater, Oklahoma assembly line. Less catalytic convertors and mufflers, but with revised engine management software, its horsepower was about 405. Tests had shown speed necessary to reset The 24 would come at 5500 rpm in fifth gear so the engine had a stop at 70% throttle.
