Dont know if this is the place to ask, if not you can move the thread.
Im looking at a used 02 f-250 crewcab short bed 4x4 w/7.3 60k miles, is 29,000 a good deal or should I hold out for a used 6.0? I am trading in my dodge on the deal its 97 w/ 173k miles, they are givin 6k for it which is over nada. Just can decide if I should go for it or not.

Any help or any dealers in houston here that could make me a better deal?

...Sounds alright.....

I have owned a 97 CC 4x4 7.3, a 2000 7.3 4x4 and a 2003 CC 6.0 4x4....

Just sold the 6.0....was a real piece of crap! In the shop more than on the road...(2003). They have made improvements for the 2004's....there is also going to be a body style change for 2005-06...by then they should have the bugs worked out....then I will buy one again...but for now if you are buying used....stick to the 7.3...The best one out there I think...(I'm sure you Mopar guys are rolling your eyes...)

I wondered about the 6.0, they had 3 last week that had 6.0, and 2003's with low miles for 30-33k. Thought they were great deals, but out of my range, they were buy backs from ford according to them, but not because of the 6.0 problems...:rolleyes

SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRREEEEEEEEE.....

I explored that but Ford says it has to "Leave you stranded" at least 3X before they consider it.....mine always made it to the dealership....I traded mine in and got 33K for it on trade with 35K miles....

I work for the electric company in kansas i work in fleet we have 100+ Ford 7.3 f-250,f-350,f-450,and we started changing them out for the new 6.0 we have millions of miles on the 7.3 with no major break downs a few turbos and some cam sensors and some pumps. The 6.0 are never out of the shop the 7.3 is a great truck

I have had my 6.0 for almost a year now and it has 22k miles on it. It runs great, much better than any 7.3 i have ever driven. The early 6.0's had problems, but if you got one later in 2003 they would run fine. It seems like most of them have problems, just cause when something is wrong, they go posting on message boards, but who bothers to write about something that is working fine?

What I've read is they are still having problems with the 6.0 and towing they are only getting around 10 mpg.

No when mine "would run" it ran fine..but when it didn't it would realllllllly run like crap! My old 7.3 had a full BANKS power pack and a "few other goodies"...would run rings around my 6.0 in any condtions (although my 6.0 was stock)...and that was with 35" BFG's and a 4" Lift to boot....With the 6.0 I pulled a 33 OL all over Texas and to Palm Beach to go to the Bahamas...towing running 70-75 I would get 12-13 MPG heavy loaded...4x4 C.C. Lariat 250 with 305 BFG AT's...

April 1st Black Book:

$25550 Clean
$24000 Avg
$22700 Rough

Add $4100 for 7.3

Deduct for excess milage:
$1550 clean
$1175 avg
$825 rough

A 60K mile truck would not do "clean" money usually FYI.
Using this info, if the dealer called the truck "avg" on trade (about $27000), a $2000 profit is -fair-, but it depends on recondition expense and how the truck looks.

still on the lot, they called today, offered 23,700 out the door thats including trade in and ttl. still thinking about it, only major issue is the dented-in bumper, kind of concerns me, came up clean on the report with no accidents-clean history. I think i may let it set a couple more weeks, and make another offer for less to see if they take it.;)
As far as reconditioning it, they installed new front shocks, 4 tires, new windshield, detailed it a little.

I'm sure you Mopar guys are rolling your eyes Oh we wouldn't do that. If I may offer my .02. Without looking at your trade, and the truck you are looking at, I could not tell you if the 23,700 out the door is a good deal or not. I can tell you that if I was looking at a truck with the miles your's has, regardless of condition, I would not put more than rough book into it. The reason being the price, in order to resell it, would have to be in a range that is easily paid with cash, as no bank (for the average person) would do a loan for a vehicle with well over 100,000 miles. If they did, the interest rate and term, would not make it feasible payment wise to justify, most people would look for a truck with fewer miles they could get a better finance deal on. With that said, the condition of the Ford in question, like you concerns me. A truck that new already needing new shocks tires and a windshield not to mention the bumper does not sound like a peach. Many questions pop up, such as why did the person trade it (if it is a trade), if it was not a trade where did it come from . What was it used for, week front shocks would lead me to think it has seen some rough times, so to speak. I realize I have gotten a little long winded, but when I was in the business, I spent most of my time appraising vehicles as well as hunting in auctions. This particular truck worries me. The market in your area may be quite different than mine, but I would definitely shop around. I can understand the dealer calling you trying to salvage a deal, but with that said, I believe there is still a couple thousand still on the table to work on. Sorry for the long reply. I have to admit, I am still a little passionate about the business and trying to help people. By the way, just because it comes up clean on a car fax, does not mean it has not been recked. If the previous owner paid to have the truck fixed himself, or it was done at a small body shop, it ws probably never reported. If you have a doubt, take it to a body shop and have them look over it. Even the best body work as tell tail signs.

Matt is right in many aspects. Carfax offers assistance, but by no means is absolutely correct. Keep in mind where they gather info.

If this truck has a mashed front bumper and had the windshield and shocks replaced, it sound to me like one of two things:

1. Low front end collision, resulting in bruised bumper, shocks, alignment, and drivers noggin mashing windshield or body flex cracking it.
2. Snow plow vehicle. Common damage to front bumper, new shocks necessary, windshield replacement common due to body flex. Try hitting a curb or parking block at 30 mph, it's a small accident in itself!

Were the rear shocks replaced? Generally on Superduty trucks they are used to tow or haul and the rears go bad first or at least the same time.

You can also look for paint work yourself. Open the doors and hood. Look in the seams, around the cowl, by the firewall, and in the wheel wells for overspray. Take the truck into the shade and look down the body panels. Usually small dents and wavey body panels will show their blemishes without the glare of the sun. Look to see if the "orange peel" is consistant in the paint. Factory paint does and is consistant with other body parts because they are painted at the same time. Lastly, look under the truck at the suspension parts. This truck has 60K and they should NOT be clean or show any new or clean part tags. There should not be any "drag" marks in the frame wax around bolts showing that they have been removed nor should any be new.
Is the lower front air dam missing? (Snow plow)

Hopefully this will help, good luck!

It is the rear bumper that is damaged, the front air dam is in tact. They tell me that the previous owner was an older guy in his mid 40-50, from Houston, no idea what he used the truck for. They went over the truck with a "paint meter" and said there has not been any repair or paint to any part of the truck. When I test drove it, I mentioned the front end being a little bouncey, that may be the reason they replaced the shocks though.
My dodge, I will admit, is not worth 6k to me. I figured they offered this b/c they jacked the price of the Ford up. They did the NADA on the truck with the VIN numbers, and it pulled up 31050, and 4600 on mine, with mine in fair condition. They flat out told me, like other dealers, they would go and auction it off b/c of the miles.
Thanks for the help, I just want the best deal I can get right now.

They went over the truck with a "paint meter" and said there has not been any repair or paint to any part of the truck. Be afraid, be very afraid. This is complete bull chit. The only thing a paint meter tells you it the thickness of the paint. Not if the truck has had repaires or not. If someone told me that at a dealership, I would leave right then and there and not even investigate it further.

Well thanks guys, I passed on this truck and found a better deal. Going to do the paperwork now, is still 02 w/54500 miles, black c/c 4x4, the cleanest one I have ever seen. Not even scratched, doesnt look like the hitch has ever been used asking is 27k. No body damage, I will post pics if all goes as planned.:biggrin
