I checked, logged myself off then came in as a guest. System did not have my name up there. This is crazy. I know this is the first time I have really been able to spend time on the site since the changes. Maybe the same for everyone else.

Are you/What kind of firewall you using?
mikeandkimlovethelakeoftheo
April 30th, 2004, 01:37 AM
Yes....firewall..Norton...I don't dare disable it...last time I did...HACKED. I get attacked at least once a night. These people have nothing better to do??

your hit more like 50 times an hour, most of it harmless spammers and such...if your not on broadband you probly wont get hacked...get a spyware checker too...banner adds send your personal info all over the net ...read this www.computerbytesman.com/...banads.htm (http://www.computerbytesman.com/privacy/banads.htm)
Switch to Zone Alarm, way way better.....it's free, if you want pro version i'll give it to ya!

Well,
It was fun while it lasted.
On the topic of security protection, I use McAffe and it is killer, it wont let me open an email from spammers as it detects malicous activity such as worms and viruses and you guys can only imagine how much email I get a day and once a week I get hit with a virus or hack that is instantly picked up, cleaned then trashed by Mcaffe. However I never have any problems with websites, even the porno ones.:lickthis

They were talking about Norton firewalls I think, not anti virus....
A lot of ppl. like Mcaffee but I had a lot of trouble with it...didn't catch a few virus and tough to update...Norton is a good anti virus, I use it because of the updates and they usually have a fix if it can't repair on their site. One anti virus won't catch everything..doesn't hurt to use an online AV too....AVG is free, and probly the best AV out today....grisoft.co m
Panda is dam good 2 and like AVG it updates daily.
Trendmicro .com has a online virus checker thats great....if you get one that won't let you update (which is what a virus sometimes does).
Also remember that an AV eats up a lot of memory, if your running XP and a AV with 128 mb's of memory your pc will be slow...upgrade to at least 256-384 mb (windows does not recognize over 384 mb of the older PC 100-133 sdram so 512 mb is a waste....this does not apply to newer ddr ram with faster bus speeds)...also shut it off when not online!
The best security advice is never put personal info on the pc you use online...use fake name or initials and never never put bank, credit card account or any kind of account numbers...never let windows remember the passwords automaticly to anything...if you send vital info via email use PGP or some other encryption software. Put that info on a cd so you can use it when necessary, not your hardrive..
If you don't want to use a Router (hardware firewall), Zone Alarm (free) or Pro is by far, hands down, no contest, the best software firewall there is...go to grc.co m and look for shields up...it test the stealth of all your ports(whether or not you invisable to hackers and spammers)....and test your pc...it will give you advice if you flunk!
Also search for and get either Spybot search and Destroy or AdAware 6....free...it gets rid of any spyware on your pc, like fastclick and doubleclick which puts your personal info all over the net. You'll be amazed when you run it the 1st time, won't believe all the ppl. watching you!
Man, I gotta stop, I could go on and on about this crap.

Dan,
Sorry I wasnt specific, My McAffee has all the add ons including Firewall, it also automatically updates throughout the day. I manually grant access when a program needs to access the internet etc. This is no simple anti virus I am running here brother on the TBM home base puter, and it aint free, it costs dollars and is subscription based annually only. I dont think this can be store bought.

When I mentioned i was attacked several times a day ,I was serious! Norton alerts me when someone is trying to attack and there is usually a trojan involved...this happens every night. My machine was recently nailed hard. I was using Kazzaa and WinMX to dowload...uh...well...nevermind. Anyway, someone got through the Norton and disabled it...then created a new "share" folder ( I NEVER SHARE ) and uploded thousands of bogus files to my computer....all the same file size but all named differently...named after music, programs, movies, sex, porn stars..you name it. Anything someone might search for was now on my computer. My PC was literally a virus server. There was no removing this...it was crazy...any application I would open would close. I couldnt delete anything. I couldn't kill any applications, when I did the computer would reboot and attempt to dial in by itself. Well, the solution was format c:\ I am not going there again....

Blake...my bad, i wasn't aware that McAffee updated daily now...you have the suite...you have to suscribe to most of the AV's annually and set up everything individually unless you get the suite's....but you can get the best AV free (AVG). I have Norton AV on this pc and it's good,,,,also have a file that makes it good until 2041...lol
Mike
you still have a virus (Kazaa) lol...
If you ain't dwnlding music, movies, kazaa is only good for huge files like XP or other operating systems...all the sftwr can be found on asta. Kazaa just opens you up to a million hackers, AV will detect a virus but any decent hacker can still get access to your files and make changes.
That virus was renaming and cloning itself, your right.....next time try putting the files in the recycle bin, then empty it...if it don't work reboot in safe mode and do it.

Dan,
You are correct, I subscribe annually to each part of my Anti-Virus which consistintly runs, checks and monitors. Once again, if I choose I allow what and which programs access the internet, incoming and outgoing.

Dan...No more Kazzaa or WinMX... My wife is mad as heck because I won't let her pirate any more music but too bad...I am not going through that. My PC got so bad it wouldn't boot into safe mode... After the first rebuild it worked fine for a week or two then the boot sector in the drive went bad. No more file downloading period. But like I said, Norton tells me of attack attempts nightly!

I also suggest using partition magic and putting the OS on it's own partition (about 10gb for XP), separate from your prog. and data....then when have to reinstall the OS you don't have to reinstall evrything or back it up.
