I was wondering What you guys think of this Match-up? the reason I ask is that a friend of mine owns a dealership (Ski- Doo) and I have the Outlaw. He wants to demo one of his boats this summer and go out for a cruise. I know at some point this is going to turn into a match-up. The boats are similar, sea-doo has a 20 degree hull weighs 2800lbs, but has twin 155hp jets. Outlaw has 20 degree hull (I think?), weighs around 2800lbs (I think?), but has the 260hp mercruiser, thru transom exhaust, ss prop. I think a prop is more efficient than jet, but jet is a lot faster out of the hole. I think the trim tabs might help me if the water is rough? I dont know what do you guys think, is it going to be ugly for me?

I didn't know they made 20 OL in 96 but my moneys on it, especially if there is a chop! The PWC GTX 4-tec at 875 lbs., 155 hp only hits a top end of 60...0-50 in 3.9 seconds. Twice the power but over 3 times the weight...even with different jets I don't think it gets there.

They certainly did make the 20 Outlaw in 1996, I even have a brochure with it. Kinda small, but probably tons of fun, looks like a mini 24 Outlaw from the same year.

I live in Michigans Upper Peninsula so no ocean, but we have lake michigan which is just as good. I think in 96 they switched from the hot shot to the outlaw. I have had my 20 up two 55mph (GPS) with the wife, my three and four year old kids (two kids) and a full ank of gas. The gps fell of the dash and I ran out of lake (small inland) but before I shut it down it captured a top speed of 55mph, the lake is only about a mile long so you dont get much time to get it trimmed out real well. I have never done a top speed run on lake michigan, but I didnt get the boat till the end of last summer. I know my friend is going to want to beat me bad so he can use it as a sales pitch in his shop. I will definitely give him all nine yards!

You guys are in luck. I just happen to have an issue of Boating life where they tested the Sea Doo. Here's the specs.

LOA 19' 9"
Dry Weight 2770
2 Rotax 155hp 4 strokes

Test conditions were I think two people(it gives the weight of people at 450lb), half tank and using a variable pitch stainless 3 blade impeller.

Top speed was 56.6 mph
0 to 20 2.7 sec
0 to 30 4.9 sec

It was tested against a Sea Ray 200 select(260hp and 3550 lb), and Supra Santera(320 hp and 3250lb). Boating life gave it highs in rapid acceleration and best all out speed.

Hope this helps.

Looks like I may have a good chance, especially if we put them on the big lake so I have some time to get it trimmed just right. Right now I have a 21p michigan prop, I also have a 23p mirage, but its out of balance. I geuss I could have the 23p fixed up for a shoot out, but I dont know that my boat would run any faster with it?

I really didn't see anything in there about rough water, but I haven't read it close.

The sea ray got high marks for its ability to trim the drive for water conditions. It was a jet, i/o, inboard shootout.

So that tells me it is not as good in the rough as a sterndrive.

You better have a nice long run...because the jet is gonna smoke you out of the hole....I would imagine rough water is gonna cause it to cavitate and go no where fast.......I think you can take him on the top end if you have enough time to get your boat wound up and leveled off. Just my opinion.....8o

You should be running that 23P prop. That is comes standard on the new OL 20s with the 260 HP motor. You should also be running about 62 MPH. Just make sure any races that happen are from a rolling start from around 30 MPH. :samurai

I agree with Pointerman....the jet is gonna fly from 0-30..if you run the 23P prop it will only be worse for you under 25-30 mph I would guess. . I find my 202 to be a pooch in the lower speeds above that you should be able to take him.

I've seen the same boat (older 20 OL) with a 260 run an honest 61-62 using a 23" Lazer II. For small block motors, I find the Lazer II's work better than the Mirage. My 1st Baja was a 1989 190 sport, same hull as the older 20 OL, with a 4.3LX and ran a honest 52-53 with a 23" Lazer. The Lazer will accellerate faster because the smaller blades and vents allow the small block to rev quicker. On a long lake you should sail by the Sea Doo with the right prop ;) . Short lake, you never catch him :x Ex. My 2nd Baja was a 22 Caliber Twilight Cruiser with 7.4L. That boat ran 63-64 GPS and a friend had a Sea Doo that ran mid 50's. I have a camp on a lake that's 1 mile in one place. It would take that whole mile just to get back on side of him after he holeshot me to death...:rolleyes
