Well, Saturday turned out to be the big day and one that I had been looking forward to ever since the order was placed back in January (H2X, 496HO, Boss Pack)

Long story short I am both very relieved and pleased to have the boat. Baja's are few and far between in these parts (I had only ever seen a H2X at the local boat show) so seing the boat for the first time and really loving the graphics scheme we had chose eased the nerves dramatically.

The boat looks fantasitc (IMO) and rides/drives like a dream (very smooth and tracks straight as an arrow). The 496HO provides plenty of grunt in the small H2X hull but I'm one of those guys that could always use more (can't we all?). Graphics/Gel coat are very impressive, nice shine and the overall finish is excellent. All the componentry in the boat seems to be of great quality (nice and solid). Vinyl is excellent; great feel, stitching, coloring etc (last boat had paper thin vinyl so this is a huge treat).

Only issues with the boat are fairly minor. The Baja emblem on the side was suppose to be solid BLACK but as you can see by the pictures that did not happen. We will have some black logos sent up and put on the boat ASAP. Tweeter on the left side of the boat fell out of its mounting hole and is dangling (the hole to mount the tweet was cut into a curve thus there is no flat surface to get a good bond. Fit and finish around the glove box is lack luster. And lastly, one of the CLarion speakers is blown.

Things i've found slightly odd.
EXHAUST: this took me by suprise, the boat is FAR FAR quieter than I could have ever imagined. With the pipes "open" at idle it sounds decent, but while under way at decent speed you cannot tell the difference with the exhaust thru-hull or thur-prop!!!?!?!?!!? I found this odd. I was expecting it to be similar to my friends 27' fountain with a 502 where underpower she really roars. Even the dealer employee dropping the boat off was confused mind you he had not had much experience with the H2X. At idle like I said you can tell it is thru-hull and it sounds good but by no means loud. Underpower there is basically no audible difference between thruhull/thurprop

PROP: I will admit, it has been awhile since i've been in the I/O scene (coming off an inboard wakeboard boat) but this drive/prop combo seemed finicky to find the sweet spot at a wide rang of speeds. It almost seemed like there was one sweet spot and than anything else just did not feel right, seemed like it was on the verge of cavitating. I know it will take some time to get back into the trim mode but this seemed slightly off (might need to get on the phone with Houston Prop).

It's quiet because of the restrictive Corsa tips, put some open tips on it and you will sound like your buddies boat...
I have a 99 H2x, and that last picture looks just like mine with the red and black, the H2X has to be one of the best looking boats ever made IMO. Congratulations! ;)

Congrats on the new H2X Matt! That baby ought to fly with that 496 Mag HO! :biggrin I like the red 'Baja' on the side. But I understand the frustration since it wasn't how you spec'd it. Where are you going to do most of your boating?

Cogratulations. Boat looks great. Ditto-get new tips. I had mine replaced before leaving the dealer showroom. Sounds like you do need some prop work. I had a lab finished prop on my H2X and could not make it cavitate or blow out. What prop did Baja put on that combination?

Thanks for the nice comments guys. The boat is up here In Central Ontario on Lake of Bays.

Ok, this is embarassing as it is the first thing I should have taken note of but i'm pretty sure the prop is a Mirage Plus 23P. I think a call to Darin at Houston prop is in order.

So the Corsas are jamming up my 496 rumble huh? The dealer rep dropping the boat off mentioned removing some baffles as did my local marine owner....I'm assuming it might be wiser to invest in new tips all together rather than pulling some baffles?
Can someone reccomend a setup that will be a little more pleasing to my ears?

You can put in a call to Voodoo marine on this site, and he can hook you up with some new tips. It will greatly improve the sound of the boat. I am very pleased with mine after the install.

Thanks again for all the kind words.

It will definitely take some getting use to as the boat that I just parted ways with on Saturday afternoon was a 2000 Tige 21V Riders Edition (possibly the most family friendly/versatile boat on earth ;) ). So needless to say this is quite the change but one that I am very excited to have made.

First matter of business is to cure this exhaust rumble (or lack there of).

Question: What do you Baja owners use to attach your fenders/bumpers? The tige had a nice trick system with a push in attachment, and to remove you'd just push and pull out (Having a major brain fade moment searching for the correct term....it was one of those "push pin" fittings with a ball...push in the button and the ball sinks into its housing to allow the pin to go into its fitting).
I've seen the mushroom cleat setups but are they decent for hanging fenders?

thanks,

matt

quick update

Finally had a chance to drop the hammer and see what sort of top end charge the H2X has. Full of fuel (75-80Gallons) with 5 people aboard the boat hit 72mph on the speedo which I was farily impressed with (need to get it on GPS).

The boat thus far has performed quite well. Comes out of the hole with little fuss and has good power from midrange right up to the big end. Planting the throttle wide open and trimming the drive up for a top end run causes the motor to bounce off the rev limiter without fail so I need to conciously back off the throttle to bring the RPM's back down to a safer operating level.

I am less than satisfied with the Mirage Plus 23P prop as I feel it leaves a lot to be desired. I have no experience with having prop's labbed but from what I'm experiencing it seems my prop would be a good candidate to make the trip to Houston Prop. I'm assuming it may help cure my issue with bumping off the rev limiter on the big end as well as allowing me to further trim the outdrive some more.

Yup, you need to get that prop modified. They can kick it up to 24p and do a little cupping to help with some of the slip problems you have complained about. Pitching it up will get you off of the rev limiter and will give you more top end. Might impact your hole shot just a pinch though. Happy boating.
