While requesting pricing for a 278 I was sent this email, another sign of tough times, however someone is going to get a great deal on these boats, just thought I would pass this on to everyone. If only I had somewhere to put that 342!!!!!

HI Ernie,
Thank you for your interest in the Baja Line.
We are no longer a Baja Dealer as of this year.

therefore, peolple a re not buying boats as they used too...
Having said that, we are left with a few interesting 2007 Baja that we are
letting go at our cost and may interest you:

342 performance twin 496 mag ho, on trailer @ $141446
in the event any of these may interest you, please e-mail me at

It's interesting that they've indicated a failing SoCal economy is the problem.
Truth be told, the economy here is just fine ...
the problem is that these high-priced boy toys must now be paid for with cash :noidea:

Some nice deals there if you have the cash. I remember a certain person paying over $100k for a 277.

Don't get the wrong idea guys; I'm not bashing Chris. His was an early production model and the dealer probably built in some extra profit. I'm just pointing out the difference in price. :smarty:

They claim cost, but I can tell you that they are still making money. Just looking at those numbers, I know for a fact that is not cost.
Good marketing technique though!!! :twoguns:

Well then just how much mark up is there in these boats? Doesn't a 23OL with a Mag engine usually price around $80K

We use to sell the 23 OL with a Mag SST for ~$55K on a trailer when they came out (2005), $80K is based on the MSRP. As far as mark up....depending on the % Baja marks up to the dealers....that gets passed along to you PLUS the mark up that the dealer is charging.... If I actually told you you'd probably crap your pants (and I'd probably get a nasty email from my old dealer and Baja).... Think of the movie "Christmas Vacation" at the end when Mr. Shirly says...whatever you got last year....add xx% to that.... That is what makes it sooo hard for me to finally buy another boat...because I have a good idea of what they sold for and what they cost...as well as some of the others here on the site have that information....

Yeah, don't tell us cause then we all will get pissed and not want to buy another and then TBM will sink this country further in the depression. You don't want that to happen to you MRBAJA?

Heck no buddy! The way I see it, as long as the person buying the boat (car, truck, whatever) feels they got a good price, then it is a good price.... As I use to say when I sold them....All boats float (hopefully)...go fwd. and backward...right and left, it comes down to what you like and what will give you many years of enjoyment with family and friends, it is a lifestyle and a temporary escape from reality that will keep you and your imagination wanting more and more...thre is no end to a persons imagination.
As long as they keep building them, people (including myself) will keep buying them....it's a passion that not many outside the boating community can (nor want too) understand....

Not sure why it makes it so hard for you to purchase knowing that information?? Because I look at it this way. If you know that information, then on the other hand, you also know it has to sell for that in order for both the dealer and baja to stay in business. JMO

Probably more of a mind thing for me Curt because the dealers won't sell them for what I think is a fair mark up where everyone makes money. Without getting into a long drawn out discussion yes, everyone needs to make money to stay in business, but at what cost? At what price are the general public getting gouged vs. making a fair profit? Case in point the origional post in this thread...the dealer is calling these prices "cost"...you know about ~ what cost is....so do I...."at what price are we gouging people vs. making a fair profit"?
Again, not trying to stir the pot or play mind games. Just adding my .02 to the thread. I have no problem spending good money on quality...just at what "I" think is a fair price....
Again, not trying to fire at anyone, just my .02...

Fair enough. I dont know your area very well and cannot comment on operating costs. But (for me) I am ok with most of it. Most dealerships do small volumes. (compared to the auto industry) So mark up is substantially more. On the flip side, overhead, land costs, inventory are huge amounts here and I realize they need it to survive. At least here anyway. I liked hearing another perspective though. Especially from another person close to the "action."
I wish you lived closer to me. One thing I love to do is talk about the marine industry as a whole. (one guy at work told me I needed my own radio show one time LOL..)
And I cannot think of a better way to talk marine, than over a beer or two. I think we could have a mighty fine time. :celebrate

Likewise Curt! My wife tells me the same thing (among other things she tells me to "go do" LOL)! Anytime you want to sit and shoot the sh!t let me know, I'm always game (although I am a bit rusty)! Also, if you ever make it to the Houston area let me know, my door is allllllways open my friend!
Always good talking with you! Wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas!
