Whelp....tommorow we put the order in....I've decided on a 212 Islander with the 496 MAG H.O. (I'm thinking it should be pretty quick) with Outlaw graphics, pipes and basically everything else you can order.
Hoping she's a sweet ride and here's to speed!!

Will Baja actually sell you that boat with a 496 Mag HO in it?
I'm suprised that the 20 Outlaw only comes with the 5.0. I'd think the 6.2 or 377 would be a kick ass package in it.
Wow, a 212 with 425 HP will be awesome!

I'm going to say you'll be in the low 70's range.
My official guess is 74 on GPS. 8)
Congratulations.

Nick...Waaay Off!
A Hammer, (which is more or less the same boat) most had a 454 / 300HP or 310HP and these babys do 68-72MPH. Now throw in a 496HO with 425HP, thats over 100horses, Still think only a few MPH gain?

Yeah, they will sell you a 496 Mag H.O. in a 21 foot boat. (cool huh?)
I love speed and one of the biggest reasons that I want a new Baja ( and a 21 footer is a perfect size for my lake) is that they will put very large HP offerings in their boats.
It's a BIG kick in cost over that regular 496 mag though ($9000 on Invoice from Baja before dealer discount) but it does come with manditory full hydrolic steering. Since they don't put that on boats that don't go over 70MPH I would assume that they feel the boat will produce in excess of that speed, hence the safety required.
Oh, by the way, I'm 2000 feet above sea level so I expect I'm going to lose a MPH there. I think this thing is going to be a pretty damn fast package overall though (I'm sure hoping anyways).
Anyone have any experience with this hull (Hammer is the same) at high speeds? Is it a capable high speed hull on small water, or is it going to be a "death ride-white knucke experience? About the worse waves we get here is the wake from another boat passing that you have to cross.
As usual, any comments are thankfully excepted!

I wonder what prop it will come with. I'd guess it'll be a Mirage Plus 3 blade 25. That ought to put ya around 74.
If it'll turn a 28, maybe closer to 80.

Here's the URL for a great prop pitch calc:
www.boatramp.com/prop_app...pletG.html (http://www.boatramp.com/prop_applet/PropAnalyzerAppletG.html)
Use 10% for the slip, 1.50 for the drive ratio and 5,100 RPM.

I would think that that package might come with the 1/36 to 1 instead of the 1/1/2 to 1 brovo drive. Im guessing 79 gps, 82 watergage. :x
Maybe a better question "Is it Insurable"?
My old Shooter had the higher drive ratio. It had the old 502 carb engine. That was a very fast boat.

Chirs,
That's a great website for the prop speed.
I just had mine repitched, from a 21 to a 23.
Now, I hope to be around 65mph at w.o.t.

Hey Sin,
NICE package on your boat........ WOW , were running a 212 Islander with a 454..... We're in the mid 60's.... hope to be closer to 70 when I FINALLY send Darin my prop for some go fast work.... yours should rock with that hp..... I'll guess Blake is just about dead on.
Enjoy......
one thing to remember.... Make sure all your passengers are seatbelted into place. :eek
note to self..... look for MORE go fast items for our Islander. |I

MissBehave,
Which 454 do you have? Which horsepower? Is it the "Mag", 385hp or 7.4L, 310-330hp?

Sounds like a super package to go with...I have the same set-up in my H2X....Now Blake my friend, let's not get too carried away with the top speed estimate. I am sure the boat will go plenty fast to make everyone happy, but not hardly the 80 mph figure you tossed out....IMO 74-75mph is a good number to go with...This is based on a boat weight of 3550 vs 3900 for the H2x, the 20 degree deadrise vs the 21 degree deadrise on my H2X...I run a good consistant 72.4 on GPS....so a weight difference of 350 lbs is good for about 1-2 mph gain at best....Anyway you cut it makes it a very quick family pleasure ride....I gotta be honest, I would love to see that boat hall a$$.
Best of luck Sinski with one nice ride....

Mid 70's at best. It will be a hand full at those speed.
Another thing to consider is resale. Your gonna have a real hard time selling it down the road. Nobody is going to want to pay the extra money for big motor and hydo steering on a 21 ft open bow. I think that motor would be better suited in a 232 or an H2X. Just my .02
Keep us posted:)

Hey Baja Daze,
I'm running the 330hp 7.4l..... Pretty happy with it thus far. We picked it up in August and was able to put on a good 20 hours but to be truthful..... I'm still learning. :p Having lots of fun......
Installing Captains Call within a few weeks along with a drive shower and a few other small odds and ends....

I sold a Donzi 22' ZX w/cuddy last year( I think around 3500 lbs.) w/ a 500/415 hp. and it speedoed in the mid-70's.....I think it was an actual 21' boat......
Better be on glass or light chop wide open w/ 20 deg deadrise, or heavily insured!

Would have liked to get a 232 or an H2X, but that's more boat than my lake requires (as I said....small,small water ....about 10 miles to be precise). To be honest, I was REALLY going to go for the 232 equiped the same way, but I just built a new 5000sq foot cabin on the lake and don't really need the cuddy to enjoy my day in (at 70 plus it's seconds home<G>). The problem with the 232 I found is that I have VERY young kids and the 232 has much less cabin room than the 212 does (bolster seats, offshore footrests, etc.), plus gives up a fair bit of speed in the process.
As for resale, I couldn't care <G>
Remember........speed changes you <BG>

Wish I had bigger water....but near as I figure (if you look on a map) I'm about as far from an ocean as anywhere's on the planet <G>.
That being said....the Indy 500 is less than 2 miles....you just have to turn a few times to get there!!!

Thanks Missbehave!
That's good info for reference. I hope you have many fun hours continuing to learn the ins-and-outs of your Baja. :)
So, Missbehave is reaching mid-60's with his 330hp 7.4L
The 496HO makes 425hp...An addition of 95hp.
Going by the (very)General rule of thumb here of 15hp per mph gain, I would expect an additional 6-7mph.
My final answer: low-to-mid 70's. :D
Have fun guys!!!

OK,,,Nick,
Let's look at this speed issue this way....Misbehave's mid 60's statement tells me it is most likely NOT gps. You and I both know speedos are way off and most "mid 60's" end up more like 60-62 mph..Misbehave correct me here if I am wrong.....Now I will say it takes one hell of a lot more than 15 hp to increase one mph in speed. In a car, maybe true, but not in a boat where there is constant drag. Not to mention it would depend on the weight you are pushing too...Now I completely agree with your estimate of low to mid 70's for a top speed. I just get there a different way.
Most 454 Mags (385hp) run in the mid 60's and most 7.4 (330) run low 60's. I have two buddies that run h2x's with 496 mags (375) that run about 65-67 mps and that is with a faster hull than some other Bajas.
Anyway.....I agree it is a sweet power combo.

srpbaer,
Good info. That a very good alternate viewpoint.
You'd be surprised though; that 15hp/mph rule is pretty close. Now, this is not to say that it's perfect or an absolute calculation-certainly 385hp/15 doesn't give you mid-60's-but in terms of 'adding' hp to an existing combo, it's pretty close.
Let's take your example: "Most 454 Mags (385hp) run in the mid 60's and most 7.4 (330) run low 60's."
The difference between "low 60's" and "mid 60's" is what, around 4mph?...Divide that out by the difference(55hp) and that gives 13.75...Not perfect, but "Pretty close." :) ;)
And you're absolutely correct in your speedo statement...Most are way too happily optimistic. :D

Nick,
Very good points.....I just wish you were predicting higher top speeds so you could bet me a steak dinner in St Pete....you know a friendly bet...actually an excuse to go to Fl and eat a free steak...Just kidding. Better yet, you could come to the mountains of east Tennessee and eat steak...you are always welcome....8) :\
Actually, I will be in Ocala for a PBA tourney in Sept. I usually go the seafood route whenever I end up down there. I used to live in Ocala and Miami years ago. Man is that another story!!!!!!
Be good and have a great boating year that is coming fast.

Remember that a specific engine has an RPM range that factors into the speed equation as well. The 496 Mag 375 is 4400-4800 RPM, and the Mag HO 425 is 4800-5100 RPM.
300 RPM makes a big difference (well, maybe 3-5 MPH) at WOT when outdrive ratio, boat weight and prop pitch are equal.

Baja estimates this boat at about 69-70 (if memory serves) in the dealer book. I think that they are pretty conservative though and that they estimate based on the worst conditions possible so as not to dissapoint. Anyone else ever reference the books speed to what they saw in teh real world, and how much difference?
The one thing that's fun till the Ice breaks, is all this guess work....something to talk about <G>

p.s. I'm piping in with my own guess. 75mph....maybe I can keep my own dollar :evil

Gottahaveit brings up another great point.
It is precisely that increase in rpm which amounts to a higher horsepower rating. Naturally, turning a given prop faster will make you go faster...The more horsepower applied, the faster an engine will maintain a given torque.
Sinski,
Sounds like their book is honest, even a bit conservative--as you said, "not to disappoint"
It's usually the salesguy you have to watch for. He's the one who'll be blowing smoke! :D
