I am thinking about purchasing a 1999 Baja 272 Boss w/502. I am looking to hear and positive or negative information and any problems to look for in this boat. If you one has this boat, what is your top speed?

I had a 272 with a 454 mag. I went from a 240 sport to the 272 and it was a huge difference in ride. Going from a (i believe) 20 degree bottom to a 24 makes a huge difference. Personally, i loved that boat. You could run it hard in alot of water without getting pounded. It had a great ride. Its very easy to handle around the docks as well.
The top speed was somewhere around 62-64 with the right water. I was told the 502 put it around 68. Im sure you will here other first hand reports of speed from people who actually have 502's.
We also overnighted in it a few times as well and it worked out ok.
My only complaint would be that around the bottom of the door where the floor curves up to meet the little lip for the door slider i got some more than average stress cracks there. Now im not sure if its from running with the door open or not but once i found it always made sure to keep the door closed ....not sure if it made a difference.
One of the other things you might look for is blistering on the bottom. From what i read, it seems that the industry had problems with how the gel was made and applied back then. Just take a look around the bottom to make sure none exists.

Good luck!

And don't blow a tire at 75 mph like I did yesterday, it tears the trailer up real good!

I have a 99 w/ a 502 MPI. It's a great ride and i love it. You should see about 67 mph with a 23 mirage plus and about 1/2 tank of fuel. My boat did blister after (3) 5 month seasons of being left in a slip. They were isolated to a 4 inch section on the bow and a small strip on each side of the boat directly under the graphics. They are being taken care of by Baja. The bolster seats have a tendency to crack the floor where they are bolted down. My passenger side bolster did this and I had it repaired. Usually happens when you are in the rough stuff and have a heavy passenger getting pushed back in the seat. Its a great boat to load 4-5 of your friends on and head out on a trip. I live about 70 miles north of NYC on the Hudson and regularly head south to NYC and the Jersey shore. Cruising at 3500 rpm gets you about 42-45 mph depending on your passenger and fuel load. Burns about 14-15 gph at that rpm. It handles rough water well for a boat its size and is a predictable ride. I think it has more room in the cockpit than the Fountain 27 footer and it's only a tick slower w/ the same power. Overall a great package.:hat
