just sold my lead sled 89 force 265 and was wanting a little advice on next purchase currently trying to chose between 92 290 and a 98 272 very different boats as you guys prob know but was wondering if any of you guys have highly mod the engine of the 272 and what numbers you were pulling out? thinking about whole new engine setup or at least stroking current one not "bolt ons" or if i'd be better going with 290 with twins? built about all i could with old 265 and still could only pull 72 or so on gps so kinda scared of single power ( i realize though that new 272 is a lot lighter and better hull ) but was wondering what lets say 600 hp would do or so? also the more i look the more the 98 272 seems like a steal you guys tell me.98 272 454 mag 250 hrs boss package with outlaw windshield eagle trailer mint got them down to 34000! what do you think ? the 290 is mint to with tri eagle trailer 454 mags 450hrs and there at 36000 for that but didn't haggle all that much they were asking 39999. but anyway any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks guys.

Tough choice! You oughta be able to tweak a 272 to get you past 70 MPH with the 454 power plant. With 600 HP instead of the typical 385, you'll be going a lot faster.

At 250 hours, you should definitely have a good engine mechanic go over it before you spring for it. That, and a surveyor, may save you grief later! Note that the price sounds average to high, based on Boattraderonline listings.

However a word of caution. Many of us have found that moving up boat sizes is a less than satisfying experience when the move isn't large enough. If you are in a 26 footer now, you may find that a 30 footer is the more appropriate move.

There are a LOT of boats out there to choose from, so I'd suggest that you consider carefully and don't rush it.

Let us know how you progress!

That's great advice from DCH. Look twice, buy once. :|

If your just after speed, you can always make twins go faster than a single. I don't know where you boat, but if it somewhere rough, then you do not want the 290. I have been in both a 290 and a 272. The 272 is much better riding boat and the 290 doesn't have that much more room in it. The 290 has a 21 degree deadrise like the old 260's, the 272 or new 275 have a 24. Man what a difference!!!

I have a 99 272 islander with 600 + hp and the thing rocks.
Although I have it set up for all around .With 1:36 ratio.(dont like break downs) But as it sits I am getting 74 with full fuel and two guys.
It apparently had a #5 on it and went 82 with same combo.

DCH was wondering why you thought a 98 272 outlaw with boss package and 454 mag was average to high i looked on traderonline and there was only one under 40000 and that was in florida with a galv trailer? didn't know if someone could let me know what they go for? thinking i could get this one for 33000 or so . thanks again guys for your help. i need to get off here and continue the search!!!!!
